Uhm maybe the child was hungry and she had no money?

So she should steal?

If your child was starving, you would steal too.

Please. Literally no one’s kid is starving in the US. Especially no one’s in Whole Foods.

I know it probably alleviates any kind of feeling of guilt or compassion to say that. Instead, try to actually educate yourself on how many Americans live instead of making ignorant statements.

This isn’t Gaza. No one starving. Prove me wrong. We have the most obese poor people in the world.

Get out of your obnoxious bubble and try to do some good in the world instead of spewing ignorant shit.

Again, that doesn’t mean anyone is starving. Being able to meet “food needs of a family member” is subjective. Poor data. Show me data that shows starving underweight kids in the US

Funny how fatphobes are always so wrong about food deserts, poverty, and the quality of "free food". It's entirely possible, even likely to be living with food scarcity and "overweight". Scarcity is a financial issue, and the public solutions are usually highly-processed, low nutrition foods. School lunch is free, and unhealthy af.

So if you're expecting malnutrition of the starvation variety, that's not what usually happens here. It's malnutrition of the nutrien-dense/whole food variety.

It's why OP is complaining she stole the "premium" nuggets, I guess

In fairness to OP, she didn’t start the “premium” nuggets thing. That was said by another poster on page 1, clearly in jest.

OP literally said "premium" in the 1st post:

"Then she put about 10 premium chicken nuggets in the container and then handed them to jar daughter to eat."

My mistake.

The typo distracted me.

I get assistance from a food bank. We get white rice, white bread, and white pasta. The fruit is bananas. The vegetables are carrots and canned or bagged white beans. I don’t know who decides what to put in the food box, but they either think we won’t eat whole grains or whole grains are too expensive. We end up with the unhealthiest version of everything.

But does that mean you are going to steal?

Make sure you put in a request for what you want next time.

No. I would not. I would go to a church and ask for help because almost all churches have a food pantry exclusively for people on need. Being a thief is a choice!

Again, you have to know where a church is, be willing to deal with the judgment of strangers (which, judging solely by this thread, will be horrific), and have the time to stop by when the church is open/when their pantry is available. You also have to have somewhere to store that food, something to cook it in, something to cook it on, some way to wash dishes...

A lot of y'all have never known poverty and it shows, both in your ignorance and in your complete lack of compassion.

I think you are the one who has never known poverty. There are LOTS of options, and if the kid is a toddler, the mom can sign up for WIC, SNAP, etc. But if she was in poverty and is shopping at Whole Foods, that is ridiculous. So this woman works three jobs, which gives her no time to sign up for the child tax credit, earned income tax credit, WIC, visit the myriad of non profit food banks or homeless shelters that provide meals, and has no kitchen, running water, or fuel to cook?

I can't get past two things:

1. the "premium" chicken nuggets. That is so bizarre. What does that adjective mean in this context and why is it relevant?

2. the conclusion that the mom is a "foreigner". What does that adjective mean in this context? Why is it relevant? And how would OP know?

2. B/c we all know that a white person shopping at Whole Foods would never snag food off the hot bar w/o paying for it (10 premium nuggets to boot).

I wouldn't have said anything, but yes, it is stealing for sure.

OP why didn't you title this "Stealing food at the grocery store" or the like? You have a disingenuous title that stirred up more pots...was that the goal.
You sound like a business owner or a laid off employee whose business had theft issues.

OP here. The woman was dressed in long skirt, hair was covered but not face. Flip flops. Pedicure. Not overtly religious garb, but definitely non-American traditional garb.

A cross between Jami Gertz/Shakira.

What the mom did was gross and illegal. I'd be bothered too. I hate free samples and open bar food because people are gross about it anyway.

Fwiw, when I was in college I had a roommate who had bulimia. She was obsessed with food and I learned on our first trip to a grocery store together that she would sample food from bins and grab candy bars and eat them while in the store. It was gross to see. She would dip her hand in the food bins and eat from her hand then move to the next bin. I doubt she paid for all the candy bars she ate but she would check out and put a wrapper on the belt and pay for one. She complained that people chastised her all the time. People shopping would confront her and she would be horribly offended. Store employees would also confront her but they never accused her of stealing. I doubt she ever stopped.

Agree, disgusting.

Also, there is no "sampling" anything from a soup/salad/hot bar.

That is a public health violation under Montgomery County’s food safety laws.

Then again, people do not care.

+1 SERIOUSLY!!
