The mom was a nurse at Emory. Do you have proof she was uninsured?

She DIED. What insurer pays out after the enrollee has died?

Chance, you are a beautiful baby who is going to accomplish great things. Don’t ever worry about what strangers on the internet said about you, you are a wanted child and loved child.

Says the party that is suddenly worried about this baby getting help via taxpayer funded social programs and an IEP at a public school.

And the same people who call the mother a “rotting body.”

Ugh.

I feel so sorry for this poor woman. If she had been cared for correctly and received better medical care, she could be here with her children.

It’s amazing the Chance is going to be ok!

You cannot honestly believe that a one-pound baby is okay.

Eight-and-a-half ounces.

That’s roughly the weight of two sticks of butter, a roll of quarters, or a smartphone.

It’s also how much Evelyn Eilers weighed when she was born 17 weeks early at University of Iowa Health Care in September 2023, making her the smallest surviving infant in the U.S., and one of three tied for third-smallest in the world, according to the Tiniest Babies Registry.

Evelyn weighed 240 grams, or 8.46 ounces, at birth. When she went home at 7 months old, she weighed 7 pounds 8 ounces—the size of an average full-term newborn.

IMG-7258

Grandma said they named the baby Chance because he has a second Chance at life. Very sweet.

Yeah, super sweet that her daughter was kept as a human incubator against her family's wishes to give birth to a NICU baby and they'll be saddled with hundreds of thousands of medical bills.

It's illogical to assume that her dying wish is that her baby would die along with her. That's not how most people think. At all.

Honestly. I have two beautiful children. And have had a miscarriage and an ectopic. And I would not wish my baby’s death and if I was third trimester and a day or week would give my baby a better outcome, sign me up. But would I want my dead body to be kept alive by machines for months to gestate a first trimester pregnancy for my parents to raise, when we are experimental territory, and there is a real possibility my child could not survive, have a short painful life, have serious life long disabilities, possibly need life long care that my parents won’t live to provide? No. If I were this woman I would want my baby to pass with me- because the likely outcome is not a 3rd trimester birth of a healthy baby, or a baby with minor issues. The sad reality is, not al wanted, wished for and deeply loved first trimester pregnancies end in healthy live births. That fact has caused me enormous personal grief and many tears. But I’ve had to accept- not al pregnancies make it.

And this belief doesn’t make me some monster. And you know what? If a woman wanted her body to be kept alive as this woman’s was, she isn’t wrong or a monster either. These are deeply personal decisions, like where to abort second trimester for fatal fetal abnormalities. They should private decisions made by the parents/family, not the government.

This!!! Say it louder for those in the back (or under a rock).

But … I remain disgusted at the “pro life” fetishization of the fetus. This whole saga was an intensely expensive, distressing and painful intervention that produced a micropreemie that will need yet more painful and expensive intervention, with a very high chance of a child with severe disability … and then the mother’s body is thrown away once it is no longer needed. All because the very natural course of events was not allowed to take place and the family was not given a choice. I believe the willingness of the mother is as the heart of the mortality and good of childbirth and childrearing - and this event made a complete mockery out it it. It is truly repellent. Her body was literally dead.

Yet the pro lifers will wax on ecstatically about “life” and “babies” and “wombs” with complete lack of acknowledgement about the immense pain and burden and unhappiness caused.

When you listen to these pro lifers you can hear that they literally worship the “womb” and the “baby” and refuse to acknowledge any legitimacy of the costs and pains of childbirth let alone the damages suffered by unwanted children. It’s all a fairy tale to them. It’s deeply, deeply negating towards any value of the woman’s life.

I am disgusted that dcum can’t show any love or respect for a baby born and his life. He’s a human being

Pretending that you know how “disabled” a newborn baby is, and how his life is worthless and he would be better off dead is abhorrent.

Mom was a nurse at Emory; she had health insurance. She was insured for her hospital stay and treatment.

Chance was a wanted baby.

Why don’t you ghouls stop basing your worldview of such situations off of a tv show based on a book of fiction? Are you that out of touch with the reality of life, or so politically motivated that even a newborn baby is seen a disposable?

The problem is that this woman, a RN, had the misfortune of being black, and her medical care was substandard. She should be alive and pregnant and happy.

The family should sue the medical centers that didn’t take care of her and Chance correctly and get a trust set up for Chance and his older sibling, so their needs are met. The doctors that didn’t medically help this woman are liable for her death and liable as they deprived two young children of their mom.

I don’t see anyone talking about “who is going pay for” the older sibling? That child lost their mom too. That child needs to be taken care of financially.

The mom’s body wasn’t “thrown away.” She was taken off life support by her family- who loved her.

The entire dcum narrative is that mom didn’t want her baby to be born, the family wanted the woman to be taken off life support, and the baby is severely disabled.

None of that incredibly gross narrative is true. If you look back at the thread created before Chance was born, posters were insisting Chance was “blind” and unable to walk, had epilepsy, etc. Nobody knew his medical status, but posters were invested in lying about an unborn baby.

What would motivate a stranger to lie about an unborn baby?

Why aren’t you all talking about how mom presented at least twice to ERs and was not taken seriously? The medical staff that didn’t give her proper care are the people who threw this poor woman away.

A tragedy occurs and what does dcum focus on? Lying about a baby.

Dcum is ignoring the poor/nonexistent medical care a pregnant black woman received that resulted in her death to complain that her baby was born and the grandmother says he is doing good and asks for prayers.

STFU disgusting forced birth ghoul. Even the most Catholic medical ethicists would have a huge problem with this.

I’m Catholic and this is actually true. Catholics believe in natural birth/ natural death. It isn’t an abortion to allow a fetus to have a natural death with its mother. Just like you can technically have an ectopic treated if you remove the tube and baby dies naturally. Now, I’m sure so,e ethicists would agree with the state. Catholics aren’t a monolith. But I’m a cradle Catholic, and ai believe the mother should have not been kept alive artificially and the baby should have been allowed to die with its mother, and join her in heaven.

Well, the reality is that after being brain dead for months, your body rots. I’m sorry if you find that unpleasant. It’s something to consider when you make your own advance directive.

^^this. I would not want my living child to go through this either - the trauma of having me on life support for 8 months instead of being able to grieve and all family resources disrupted permanently. My #1 priority would be my actual alive child.

It is also important to note though that prior to this, it wasn’t just the family choice. Hospitals would not agree to put a 1st trimester pregnant woman on life support. They can and do withdraw futile measures all the time and family members cannot demand they continue in some states.

PP and BTW— for the person who is going to point out that this baby would not have been baptized and under Catholic doctrine would be in purgatory, not heaven— yeah. I know the doctrine. But I guess like most Catholics I’m a bit a la carte. I have lost pregnancies and I don’t believe in a God who would separate me from my loved and wanted unborn children in heaven. I literally can’t believe in that God and still function. But yes, I know the doctrine. I just think it’s wrong here. Nothing is more innocent or pure than an unborn child or baby. There is no reason their souls should be in purgatory.

And I know here, natural death of the mother and baby is doctrine. And for everyone on here yelling about God— if you believe in God, you then you know our time on earth is limited and what is important isn’t that we spend as much time on Earth as possible. When God calls us home, we then it’s our time. It’s not at all cruel to allow this mother and child to die a natural death together and be together for eternity in heaven. Nobody wanted to abort this baby, which would be taking an action to end its life. They are saying the actions here to prevent its natural death are wrong. Heaven seem a lot better to me than short, painful, disabled life forced artificially against the wishes of God to call these two people home.

So don’t come at me with God and mortality. What happened here isn’t Gods will.

Is your mind incapable of nuance? No one wanted this baby to die. No one is angry the baby is alive. The issue is not so black and white.

Personally, I have mixed feelings because the mother was unable to consent to what was done to her body. I have concerns over the financial implications of this herculean effort to keep this baby alive on the family, that again, was not given the opportunity to consent. I have concerns that people like you, with no ability to comprehend nuance, will look at this as a win and we'll see even more state control over women's bodies and lack of consent required for medical procedures. I personally think people should make their own medical decisions, and the state and the public should stay out of it.

I wish this baby all health and happiness, but I dont think it's as simple as baby lived so everything done to his mother without her consent was justified. You could justify any number of terrible things if all that matters is a living baby at the end of it.

+1. the gross old men of Georgia passed a law that ended up creating a complex and fraught situation out of something that should have been handled between the family and the doctors.

She's now preparing to say goodbye to her daughter. Newkirk said the hospital will take Smith off of life support Tuesday.
"It's kind of hard, you know," she said tearfully. "It's hard to process."
She wishes she had more time“”

I agree. This entire situation is heartbreaking for the family.
