Wow...this is so far from the truth and reality that it's crazy.

You are mentally ill if you think Towson is embarrassing. Hopefully you seek treatment and your kids don’t end up like you.

No, I'm not, you are though. The OP's feelings are more than justified.

Bullshit

You're clearly not in society or something if you're so far off the deep end you can't see reality for what it is.

Are you drunk already, sweetie? Enough of your bullshit.

You are exactly the class of person I would except to be associated with a school like Townson. You are part of the reason why it is embarrassing!!!

I have no association with Towson, sweetie! You’re still full of shit.

Sorry you can't afford to be embarrassed because Townson is the best your people could ever do.

Take note folks, the true colors are coming out!! This poster really is scum.

You were the troll who said Towson wasn't embarrassing to anyone and no one could ever think that (a lie).

You literally can’t even articulate what’s wrong with Towson.

I have to make an argument for why a school with an 1100 SAT average and an 80% admit rate is embarrassing for a kid who scored 1480 on the SAT?

Please enlighten us, you claim to be around such brilliant friends that are rich. Why exactly is Towson embarrassing? Be specific, don’t get shy now.

To be blunt, you'll be associated with dumb people for the rest of your life. People will assume you're kind of an idiot and you'll constantly be trying to prove that you're at least of average intelligence.

Towson is also a poor school. In terms of students and the families they come from, yes, but also institutionally. Its endowment per student is less than 10k...which is abysmally low.

Someone with a 1480 should probably be going to a school at least as good as Tulane...Towson is a huge disappointment.

Let me know if you want more information.

Why are you worried about what people will think of you? Why’s wrong with being around the true middle class? Seriously.

It's not even that there's necessarily anything wrong with being around those people who you call the true middle class (I think more likely they are of the lower class but I digress.) It's that a 1480 clearly would probably fit in better amongst better people and the people at Towson are likely not their intellectual peers.

Who exactly are “better people” and why would this matter?

For example, at UVA the median SAT is 1470. Those students.

You said better people, not better students. Can you elaborate on what exactly you meant by that?

A 1470 is better than an 1100.

So they’re not “better people” they just have higher test scores, right?

People who have higher test scores are better people, at least in terms of intellect.

So your only concern is a test score? That’s why you’re worried about how people will perceive you and that’s why you’re concerned about being around the middle/lower class? All your angst is over a test score?

I'm not concerned for myself. I'm explaining to you why people are/would be. They're not only around 1100s but people assume they're an 1100. It's embarrassing for a smart kid. What don't you get about this?

I reject your premise. A smart well-adjusted kid could handle that scenario with ease.

By transferring, maybe.

If you couldn’t have been successful from a place like Towson maybe you are not that impressive. Smart kids can find personal and professional success from places like Towson.

Oh please. You poor dumbs always pull out this erroneous argument. Socially, it will obviously be tough for a smart kid to be relegated to a school like Towson. Why are you trying to deny reality?

You sound like a soft crybaby

I'm the OP. DH just doesn't believe in going away or paying application fees for schools we were not interested in. He thinks his children should be close and that you shouldn't pay more for a school that has similar outcomes but OOS prices. We had many discussions about it. We both strongly believed that our child would get into Maryland and we wouldn't need to worry about it. It came as a great shock that he didn't get in. Still, DH is outwardly saying that it was the right decision and UMD just wasn't meant to be and Towson is just as good. I don't agree, but for my son's sake I am trying to get there.
But what about merit from a place like Bama? Better network than Towson for the same price.

There are hardly any good ones. The Naval Academy doesn't count. That leaves UMD. Or do you think Bowie State is good?

Certainly better name recognition. Outside of this area, Towson will leave everyone asking what and where.

DP here. I'm sorry to tell you that everyone I know, from lower to upper middle class, has dim views of anything other than flagship state colleges and above. It may not be fair, but if this is a mental illness, then a LOT of people have the same one!

The DC area attracts a lot of people from all over the world who come here because they were able to grasp opportunities and do better for themselves than their families' situations. It makes sense that this would translate to a certain level of ambition for their children. This is neither good nor bad. To me, it's very understandable. There are plenty of other places in the world where people live the lives of their parents, and don't worry too much about where their kids go to college, or if they go at all.

Then everyone you know is an idiot LOL

PP you replied to. Sure. Idiots who did better for themselves than where they came from. I don't think any of us mind you calling us that. I'm not going to start a fight with someone who seeks to strenuously defend institutions like Towson, it would be a waste of my time

I’m not defending Towson per se, I’m rejecting your premise because it’s bullshit

What the PP is saying is 100% true. Sorry!

Bullshit. Sorry!

Here's my guess: your kid goes to a shitty school and you're trying to convince yourself there's no way everyone around you, who have been nothing but nice to your face, could have been lying the whole time?

Wrong. Oh, and you’re a piece of shit.

So she married well. Not sure that's a ringing endorsement for being a Towson grad. Especially in the 90s.

Both got professional degrees and both work hard.

Guess which brother has no loans and makes a ton more money?? Spoiler alert: it’s not dh.
But OP's son isn't getting a huge scholarship, so he's not getting his merit's worth.

Just curious, what's the average SAT score, acceptance rate, percent submitting scovre at the "not high ranked" school?

Also great extracurricular opportunities. She is not the only one I know who doesn’t view Towson as a not great consolation prize. The kids are very excited and I am very proud.

Can you be more specific? What did she turn down and which of Towson's programs appealed to her? How are internships easier to get from Towson?

+1 I love Towson and would’ve been happy if my DD selected it, but your son could’ve gotten merit/based aid at a nearby SLAC. Nonetheless, as a good student, he’ll do well anywhere.

There’s nothing wrong with Towson. But there must be more to this story. Did student apply early action? There are very, very few spots left in the “regular” round. Was their application complete? Was there some kind of major red flag?

At our high school, a student with these stats absolutely would have been admitted.

Honestly, mom, YOU are an embarrassment.

You know nothing about me or my circumstances, troll.

I don't need to know anything about you besides the fact that you're thinking of this in terms of "redeeming ourselves." You're gross.

I’m a NP and I’m going to stop reading here.

OP, I’m in agreement with the poster above. The attitude is rather gross.

I’m a teacher and I’ve seen stellar students happy to head to Towson. I had a student pick Towson this year over good state schools (like Georgia, Wisconsin, and Penn State) because he wanted to stay in-state. Towson will be full of bright students who chose it for a variety of reasons. They just won’t be prestige chasers, which I see as a HUGE positive.

You say you are being supportive, but I wonder if your child can feel your disdain.

Is your son interested in Accounting as a major? Accounting is a strong major at Towson and you can get good internships

Anonymous wrote:If true this is horrible. I don’t feel bad for you as parents but your son worked hard and you limited him in a way that was very unfair. Unless there are special circumstances which I can’t imagine - surely he could have gone a couple hours to a nearby state. You should be embarrassed for holding your kid back not for his school.

+1 The parents are pretty uninformed about college financing. It's not like it was 20-30 years ago. Towson is OK, but doesn't reflect their son's GPA/test scores. I'm surprised he isn't more upset about it.

Absolutely. A kid with a 1400, never mind a 1480, should not be going to a place with an 1100 SAT median with only 20% even submitting scores at all.

Agreed. It’s not that Towson is necessarily bad, but the kid had stats to aim much higher. I hope he got a scholarship to Towson at least.

Yet the kid can still be happy and successful at Towson and beyond, no?

Certainly, but let’s be honest, it’s perfectly normal to be disappointed in a situation like this.

Why would someone be disappointed if their kid is happy and successful?

He's not successful (yet). We don't even know he's happy - he might just be putting on a face for the sake of his parents whom he believes are big Towson fans.
