Embarrassed about Towson

Anonymous
What’s wrong with Towson? Serious question.
2 of our neighbors kids went there and had a good experience.
I have a MS kid.

I don’t see anyone with those stats get rejecting from our W school (counting Spring Connection as acceptance). If this is real, I’m guessing something was off with his application. I’d apply as a transfer if he doesn’t end up liking Towson and hire a professional to review his applications because this doesn’t add up at all.

I don't have any hard data on this since Mcps naviance a mess but I can see this being possible. With TO a 1480 is only a good score. Add in grade inflation and a 1300 SAT kid with 4.0 propped up by Mommy helping with schoolwork is totally getting in over this kid.

That makes no sense. OP’s son had a 4.8 weighted. That makes him near the very top of his class. I call BS or a defective application.

His dad was insistent that we would never send him away and that seemed fine when we were touring UMD in the Fall. I didn't realize until he got denied at Maryland, that UMD was the only school that I would be happy with. I know others like UMBC, but he wanted more of a social scene and truthfully UMBC is no better than Towson. Outwardly, we both say how excited we are and nobody knows that I feel this way, even my son.

It really hit home when we were at graduation this week and all the girls had their decorated caps with these prestigious universities and my kid is going to Towson.

I had suggested community college with a transfer to UMD, but he was not interested.

Can anyone say positive things about Towson? Did anyone else deal with this feeling of sadness while hiding it from their kid and family?

(He had a 4.8 GPA, 1480 SAT, 9 AP courses)

Wow Shame on you

What do you not understand about college ?

What do you not understand about getting a job after college?

Before telling the world you are an idiot do some research

He can transfer but some majors are s and impossible to get into. Towson is a good school.

Wow...this is so far from the truth and reality that it's crazy.

You are mentally ill if you think Towson is embarrassing. Hopefully you seek treatment and your kids don’t end up like you.

No, I'm not, you are though. The OP's feelings are more than justified.

Bullshit

You're clearly not in society or something if you're so far off the deep end you can't see reality for what it is.

Are you drunk already, sweetie? Enough of your bullshit.

You are exactly the class of person I would except to be associated with a school like Townson. You are part of the reason why it is embarrassing!!!

I have no association with Towson, sweetie! You’re still full of shit.

Sorry you can't afford to be embarrassed because Townson is the best your people could ever do.

Take note folks, the true colors are coming out!! This poster really is scum.

You were the troll who said Towson wasn't embarrassing to anyone and no one could ever think that (a lie).

You literally can’t even articulate what’s wrong with Towson.

I have to make an argument for why a school with an 1100 SAT average and an 80% admit rate is embarrassing for a kid who scored 1480 on the SAT?

Every college has kids above the 75th percentile, what’s the big deal? Why is this embarrassing?

You're being grouped in with 1100s. There's a huge difference in association and how you're perceived when you tell people where you go.

Why would that matter?

It is not embarrassing, nothing about Towson is embarrassing.

Please enlighten us, you claim to be around such brilliant friends that are rich. Why exactly is Towson embarrassing? Be specific, don’t get shy now.

To be blunt, you'll be associated with dumb people for the rest of your life. People will assume you're kind of an idiot and you'll constantly be trying to prove that you're at least of average intelligence.

Towson is also a poor school. In terms of students and the families they come from, yes, but also institutionally. Its endowment per student is less than 10k...which is abysmally low.

Someone with a 1480 should probably be going to a school at least as good as Tulane...Towson is a huge disappointment.

Let me know if you want more information.

+1 The parents are pretty uninformed about college financing. It's not like it was 20-30 years ago. Towson is OK, but doesn't reflect their son's GPA/test scores. I'm surprised he isn't more upset about it.

Absolutely. A kid with a 1400, never mind a 1480, should not be going to a place with an 1100 SAT median with only 20% even submitting scores at all.

Agreed. It’s not that Towson is necessarily bad, but the kid had stats to aim much higher. I hope he got a scholarship to Towson at least.

Why are you worried about what people will think of you? Why’s wrong with being around the true middle class? Seriously.

It's not even that there's necessarily anything wrong with being around those people who you call the true middle class (I think more likely they are of the lower class but I digress.) It's that a 1480 clearly would probably fit in better amongst better people and the people at Towson are likely not their intellectual peers.

Yet the kid can still be happy and successful at Towson and beyond, no?

Certainly, but let’s be honest, it’s perfectly normal to be disappointed in a situation like this.

OP, did your kid apply to UVA and William and Mary?

It's more than normal. It's the only natural way to feel.
