Just as long as you don’t mind the owner having a recording and sending it to the police.

LOL. My car got stolen from inside my garage attached to my house (so, B&E, trespassing, destruction of property and Grand Theft Vehicle) and the cops didn't even come out. I'm sure they'd jump right on a call for "nuts rubbed on door handle"

I think they would come for sexual crimes a lot faster than your car.

Rubbing your nuts on a car is not a sex crime.

So citizens can't record police officers with their phones? Good to know.

How does an owner of a Rivian not know this?

You think a Rivian is a “giant truck”?

FFS, what do you consider to be a “small truck” then?

DP.

Yes they are giant trucks. It’s awful!

No one needs these gigantic vehicles!!

You know they're electric, right?

And?

They are still comically oversized - no idea why insecure people get conned into splurging on this stupid planet killing status symbols that they look foolish driving around in a congested city in.

Because they like it. Next!

So you admit they have been conned!

No, you’re the pervert recording it.

Seems like the car owner got what he deserved.

hahahaha nice try. I invite you to go rub your balls on someone's ring or Tesla door handle and see if the police agree with you. Go test your theory, Mr. Brave Balls.

What? no.

Just don't buy one if you don't like them and don't worry about what someone else likes.

You are totally wrong. It’s illegal to record voices; it’s been part of Maryland law forever.

Are all of you mere children, who don’t remember Linda Tripp?

Linda Tripp was indicted in Maryland for illegally recording a voice telephone conversation with Monica Lewinsky without Lewinsky’s consent. Tripp secretly taped conversations with Lewinsky after Lewinsky revealed a sexual relationship with President Bill Clinton. Tripp's actions were illegal because they violated Maryland's wiretapping laws.

OP: your Rivian-owning friend is going to prison over what he did !

So what about Ring cameras, etc. those record voices. are those illegal in Maryland?

It's the public vs. private things. You can't go into someone's home and secretly record them without their consent. You have a reasonable expectation of privacy INSIDE your home or office. That expectation doesn't apply outside. Outside of your house = public as far as the law in concerned.

However, there have been some successful video with audio recording challenges in MD. The context of the conversation matters. If the conversation held in public was deemed to be private and confidential in nature and was illegally recorded, then the Rivian owner could get in trouble.

Just another aspect showing how our legal system has failed to keep up with technological changes adequately enough.

Can you cite to those cases? I would really LOVE to know as a resident of MD. If people want to stand in front of my house and have private conversations, that's on them. My Ring is recording, however, and it's perfectly legal.

People standing in front of a Ring NOT expecting to be recorded are complete and utter idiots. No matter where they live.

This means we are recorded in restaurants as well. Makes me want to visits restaurants less often because I love to dig deep and talk about juicy personal topics with good friends.

Good reminder not to bother with coffee shops or restaurants.

Any time you step out of your house, be on your best behavior and assume you are being recorded.

If you have an iPhone your conversations have been been recorded for years.

I think most people have no idea they are being recorded when they are near one and, despite being in 'public', I think most people would assume a conversation they had with their spouse in an empty parking lot would be private. Well, he 'caught' a neighbor sh*t talking about him and now he can't let go of it. He showed me the recording and it was a pretty brutal take down. But, now he wants to confront the guy.

I'm telling him that's insane, right? Possibly even illegal, no?

I think it's super weird that he was even listening to the recordings. Has he always been mentally ill or is this an affliction that developed later in life? Which personality disorder does he have?

Yes, this. I have a Rivian as well and while it lives in a garage I have been tons of places in public where people have been standing near my car and not once as it ever occurred to me to go listen to the recordings to see if I caught anything interesting.

Do you plan to try out that Rivian feature now?

I'm going to be completely honest because this is an anonymous forum. There is a mom from my children's sport who has been causing drama and people often end up congregating around the cars and chatting. If I saw her talking to someone near my car, I absolutely may go back and watch the footage. But I don't have nearly enough time on my hands to go back through it all to see if she got near the car, I'm just saying if I happened to see her standing there talking to someone then I might.

How much GD footage is saved? Isn't it overwritten?

I'm the PP and we have a Rivian. It looks like it only starts recording when there is activity (so it's not 24/7) and it keeps it for about two weeks. I know because after I posted we saw a dent in our car and went back to check the footage to see if we could find out who did it.
