And that's bad considering the current GOP party? The 2 emory students in the video seem LGBT anyway |
If a kid is staying in state it’s hard to compete with free tuition at UGA and Georgia Tech. |
GA Tech for free vs. full freight at MIT. Heck yeah. The difference in prestige isn't that huge. And to save $400k. Yup. Not saying everyone will do it. But I'm sure there are those who do. Plus you will have a lot more fun at Tech (not that it is a party school, but more fun than MIT). |
I would never send my kids to any of those public schools. |
| I went to NESCAC but it took urging on my part to get my Southern kid to even look at them. Down here, they’re surrounded by many many successful people who never considered going anywhere but their state flagship or another Southern state flagship, and who have a lot of loyalty to their alma mater. The pull of the Northeastern privates just isn’t as strong. |
Exactly. People in ATL respect Ivies, Duke, etc. a lot. But you can also go very far by going to UGA and being in the right fraternity and meeting the right people. This is a small group of people and I wouldn't count on it but those who make fun of southern flagship schools don't realize the power of those degrees and relationships. And I'm sure many northerners will say "but who wants to be one of them?" I don't. But I wouldn't thumb my nose at them either. |
| Does anyone have the numbers for top LAC’s like Colgate, Holy Cross, Midd etc |
| Duke is different than the Ivies down South because of its southern heritage. Southerners have been going to Duke since its inception while its northern connection is probably 75 years. Sure if you aspire to be local bank president or sell insurance UGA pull is strong but the doctors and top lawyers are often Dukies. Duke Med School is tops in the South. |
Me either. US news rankings are not indicative of quality of academics these days. |
| Op, why should we care? These results are good but not crazy good. What a waste of a thread? |
BC is a bad school and might as well be a public charging 90k a year |
| Based on thread 16 kids to Wake, BC, and BU hardly great schools |
Exactly. UGA parent here - remember that some of us stay in the south and focus our network in the south. |
| Duke is Duke . |
I can't imagine many kids who can get into the right fraternity at UGA can also get into Harvard or an Ivy. At least at our strong public in PA, most of the smart/ivy kids aren't fraternity types. Let alone the kind that can get into the right fraternity at a huge state school. |
