Northwestern v UChicago

It is probably a 5min wait -and is free and already has tens of thousands of rides tracked since the start of the school year. So this is hugely successful. Also they have installed cameras everywhere, following feedback last year from the parents. I am super pleased with Dean Hale and my kids feel safe on campus.

I applaud these safety measures put in place at the University of Chicago, but I feel sad that they are needed. I would not want my kids spending four year of college in such an unsafe environment.

Oddly, there are about zero typical cheap “college” bars & few college student-oriented restaurants near the Northwestern campus. Nothing like those bars & restaurants just across the street from the Vanderbilt campus. However, in various neighborhoods over the border in Chicago there are bars & restaurants.

Isn’t that the problem though?
Now that Greek life is dying there isn’t really a social outlet in Evanston. So kids go downtown but then you are not with other students - you are just with the general adult population. Can be weird as an 18yo

It’s much closer to the U of Chicago stereotype (serious academics, little fun) than it was 10+ years ago.

A lot of NU students have high school friends at U of Mich, & when they visit them in Ann Arbor they reportedly find a balanced mixture of brains & fun that they had hoped to find at NU.

Michigan alum with a current NU student and I agree with the above. For what it is worth, the NU admin is aware that there needs to be more social opportunities on campus since Evanston is not like Ann Arbor and doesn’t offer much in the way of the sports bars and student centric restaurants etc. They are currently building a really nice outdoor space on the back of Norris (student center) that will have a pub/restaurant for the students to go to as well as fire pits, etc all taking advantage of their amazing lakefront property. The whole campus is stunning and they clearly have a lot of money and are financially sound. My DC not a huge partier but they do have Greek life for those who want it. I think UChicago and NU both attract similar types of students nowadays so vibes are likely pretty similar but NU location can’t be beat!

when will this work be done?

from our private, the social/smart extroverted kids chose Duke, Cornell, Vanderbilt and Michigan OVER Northwestern last cycle. The kids that ended up at Northwestern that we knew are introverted - haven't been to a football game this year with no plans to attend.

Cornell over NU in this analysis? All the others make sense

Makes sense for Dyson.

Getting I-banking jobs from Northwestern is very competitive and not a dime a dozen like at Cornell

This was true maybe 15 years ago, but IB placements for Northwestern is quite stellar. Wouldn’t be surprised if it surpasses Cornell on a per capita basis.

Doesn’t even come close.

Northwestern placement is more buyside focused

Wow. These placements for Northwestern are really impressive, almost hard to believe. Basically near-HYP level?

why hard to believe? The only difference between a Northwestern student and a HYP student is pure luck/lottery. The applicants for these schools are pretty much the same calibre.

They end up at the northside Wrigleyville and Lincoln Park bars that DePaul, UIUC, and new grads all go to.

Meant UIC not UIUC

Northwestern if you are hyper intelligent but a “normie” at heart. UChicago if you are hyper intelligent and also pretentious to a fault.

My husband went to northwestern, loved his experience. My daughter visited both universities and she decided on U Chicago.
She is a sophomore now and truly happy there.
Both universities are amazing and any kid is lucky to be in a city like Chicago and get a top notch education.
