Agree or disagree: University of Michigan OOS is ridiculously overrated

It’s #19 in USNWR global university rankings, tied with Cornell.

For context, Princeton is #18.

UVA is #125.

No one knows if their kid will actually get into UVA in state these days. It’s all a crapshoot - UVA, Michigan, UT Austin, UNC Chapel Hill, UCLA.

Actually, it’s not. Michigan is the easiest school to get into oos of all the schools you mentioned. That’s why it is so popular in this area: kids can get in, and parents can pretend their kids go to a top school, paying top dollar for the pretense. Some people know better — and some don’t.

I think you have only succeeded in contextualizing how ridiculous “global” rankings are.

NP. I always thought Michigan was an excellent school. Definitely pricey. What's your problem with it?

It's a safety school period. UVA is near impossible to get into these days, UNC too

Not as good as UVA and UNC because it has a higher acceptance rate?

I did. Other than cost, no one has shared anything of substance.

You don't go to a school to overall attend all degree programs or participate in all research, etc.

The argument for Michigan often seems to boil down to "the ideal school looks like Michigan and Michigan looks more like that than any other school therefore it is better."

Name another school that is top 5-10 nationally in just about every major and program.

Berkeley. Berkeley has a higher average program rank than Michigan by a comfortable margin.

Michigan: 21

Harvard: 3

Other than in law school, it seems Michigan and Berkeley are the ones competing and UVA is generally inferior. Harvard is also inferior in some departments to Michigan and Berkeley — especially engineering.

Harvard 6 for undergraduate business? Why don't you use like for like? MBA is Harvard then Berkeley then UVA then Michigan.

Yet Harvard undergraduates make more than Berkeley, Michigan, and UVA undergraduates in engineering, technology, software, consulting, law, finance, and marketing.

Harvard grads in engineering and CS generally go into finance or consulting regardless, which distorts the pay averages. Whereas Michigan grads in those fields do actually go into engineering and computer science, which pays less than Wall Street.
