UTK the next elite public?

Ranks are ever changing which is why you shouldn’t focus on that when applying to schools. UTK is a good school. I’ve been seeing a lot of smart well rounded kids heading that way. Some of you knocking it must not of gotten in.

Felt the same. Which Southern towns did you prefer?

My DC fell in love with Knoxville and UTK, really liked the vibe there... The other campus that was a highlight in the south was USC-Columbia.

Every time I read one of these, I know immediately where someone is headed and the parent is trying to rationalize it into being better than it is. UTK is a good school. Smart kids go there. It isn’t in the league of UT or UF. Still very good. Let’s all be happy our kids end up somewhere nice and not try to talk every school into being elite.

My son is headed to UTK in 6 weeks to study Nuclear Engineering. He was given merit that made it more affordable than VA in-state. He committed to playing rugby as well. He got off the waitlist @ UVA but decided to stick with UTK (I would've preferred UVA for the proximity but I'm not my son). UTK is one of his college counselor's favorite schools and had nothing negative to say (politics aside as he's coming from a DC private - TN politics suck). He's happy with his decision - go VOLS!!

And the acceptance rate for OOS this year was 23% - 45% in state. UTK has become increasingly more difficult to get into. For reference, we didn't look any further south than UTK and even TN is pushing my limits. But he's happy so I'm happy! And UTK has a decent rugby team and UVA does not. Nor does Tech (better than UVA).

Wait for CDS for true acceptance rate. I don’t think what you cited includes wait list admits which at UTK is very substantial.

Actually this is important. Listen to the people that know the system better than you. Do your due diligence and don’t ignore the dirty underbelly they don’t want you to see.

Rankings and desirability are two different things. UTK is a very desirable school and isn't an easy admit. The kids that want to go there are smart, not Michigan smart, but smart none the less.

In this case, the rankings lag the desirability.
