UTK announced a year or two ago? that they were changing acceptance policy to prefer in-state students, similar to what UVA does and what the Florida schools do... Can't blame them, they are the in-state tax payers. It's a popular school, and they have a ton of OoS applications, hence the acceptance rate for OoS goes way down. It doesn't make UTK an elite public in the same breath as UCLA or UvA or Michigan.

It's a great school, and looks like a lot of fun.

DS wanted to go there but got deferred.

I'm a high school counselor in VA and we recently learned through a press release that UTK is being added to Colleges Worth Your Money. According to the release the book is adding 10 universities and UTK is one of the 10 new schools. Speaking on just our students, we have observed more students applying over the past few years. Large publics throughout the south are generally becoming more popular from what we see.

Seems understandable... I've seen that w/ my older two DC.

For out of state, some of the applications went out to: FSU; Clemson; USC-Columbia; Ole Miss; UTK, and zero interest in schools in the northeast. The crap that was going on in Columbia w/ the Israel-Palestinian issue did not help endear my kids in that direction.

I know many of the "elite schools" are in the northeast, but both of my DC had no interest there, the desire was to find a decent school w/ others that they could identify with...

We'll see if any of the southern schools get my money.

DC#1 wound up at UVA;
DC#2 is looking at Penn State and awaiting on VT and UVA to release.

The state flagships will all do fine. In fact, admissions to state flagships will become even more competitive in the years to come despite the demographic cliff. At this price point - $350,000+ for private universities; $200,000+ for OOS, times number of children - affordability becomes the main driver of college admissions. Nearly the entire MC and UMC is being funneled into state schools and that's not going to change. Some of the peripheral state campuses may close or be consolidated. But the state flagships will all thrive. The quality of their students is only going to get better year after year.

The best public universities - the UCs, Texas, UVA, UNC - all come from states with thriving, dynamic, professional local economies that depend on a well educated workforce. UVA wouldn't be UVA without Northern Virginia. The UCs wouldn't be the same without Silicon Valley. UNC and the Research Triangle. And so on. That's where UTK is a little limited. High schools tend to suck in Memphis and rural Tennessee. While Nashville is thriving, it's not enough. If UTK really wants to make the leap to the top tier of public schools, they'll have to follow the Michigan model and import 50 percent of their students from out of state. In the meantime, UTK will continue its steady rise just like all the other state flagships as they capture more and more talented MC and UMC students who are priced out of alternatives.

Meh, middle TN privates blow DC out of the water.

My DC fell in love with Knoxville and UTK, really liked the vibe there... The other campus that was a highlight in the south was USC-Columbia.
