At these price points for college, every single state flagship in the country is becoming increasingly selective. And when it comes to OOS students, they can all turn that dial to be more selective or less selective as they see fit. Many are under state limitations. So UNC Chapel Hill is an incredibly difficult admit today for OOS. So is Texas-Austin. But they have state mandates that preclude them from accepting more OOS students. I don't know the particulars about Tennessee. But I'm sure they can turn that dial to highly selective for OOS students if they want to. As can every state flagship.
Like, do you want to make the University of Maryland an "it" school? Turn that dial to only 10 percent OOS and it will become one of the most competitive schools in the country, especially for engineering and cs, which is already very difficult. State flagships can make things very difficult for OOS applicants. As for general status, Georgia Tech, Texas, UVA, Texas A&M, Florida, UNC, and Georgia are all rolling higher today. But the South values college, so there are going to be a lot of good options besides Tennessee. And as an aside, my kid went to a southern school. But a private. Their observation was that Tennessee fans were the most obnoxious knuckle draggers among all southern schools. |
+100 This is widely known for those in SEC or southern circles. All the moms bragging about “UTK” need to understand the reputation is basically the same as WVU in terms of culture in the south. |
Tennessee's knuckle-draggers are no worse than the knuckle-draggers and townies that follow any SEC school. Other than Vanderbilt, the average SEC school's fanbase is probably comprised of about 50% alums, 20% townies, and 30% in-staters saying "I like the [insert school or mascot name here] because my cousin went there back in the nineties."
You think Tennessee's dim bulbs are any dimmer than those affiliated with Ole Miss, Miss State, LSU, Kentucky, Bama, Arkansas, or Oklahoma? I think not. |
Absolutely. Ask anyone in the SEC. It’s not that they are any more dim, it’s how they act. |
UTK is going to be like attending college in an oven in a few years as climate change bakes us alive. |
We gotta stop assuming acceptance % is a clear indicator of academic quality. |
You picked a school ranked 109 over a school ranked 24? What? I know ranking is not everything, but UVA and Tennessee are not even in the same league. Really, really poor decision. |
Nonsense. The best college for a kid is the one that fits he or she the best. Also, your kid will be able to enjoy better sports teams now. |
I am in now way a UTK booster…but if you are going to study nuclear engineering then it’s actually an easy choice to pick UTK. Almost any other major and I would agree. |
They will never be elite as long as their school is known for having a racist and homophobic environment |
UGA would have been a better fit if you wanted the SEC’s version of UVa. |
People are saying that about schools that are great but are too “woke” anyway. My kid is at South Carolina in the business school. It will probably never be considered “elite” and it will never be HSPY. But: 1) they are learning a ton (finance, accounting, stats, data science, org behavior, etc). 2) the dean of the b school said they had 16,000 applicants to the b school and only accepted 1600. So, 10% accepted for the b-school. 3) they received a scholarship for $16k a year, making it the same cost as many Va schools all in. (40k COA) 4) they will get a job easily. Already have gotten an internship. 5) socially and weather wise, it is fantastic. I wish there was no Greek system (they are not in one but still have a great social life) but I think Greek systems (and even Princeton dining clubs or secret societies) are dumb in general. That could be said about many schools. The kids at the school are more liberal than the state of SC is politically. I’m hoping my kid’s perspective rubs off on them, and that more South Carolinians grow more educated about political issues, more like the rest of the east coast politically, and it gradually becomes less of an issue. They have a mix of friends that are both conservative and liberal and it hasn’t been an issue. No one is hanging up a confederate flag in the dorm though. The only way places like SC, Indiana and Tennessee are going to change is if there’s some idea exchanges with people outside their current bubbles. It’ll never be Manhattan, but I’m hoping it will gradually get less insular with more people taking advantage of the positives in those places. Also the abortion thing is a red herring. Any kid whose parents can pay for college out of state can pay to get them back to home to get health care. |
With a median test scores of 1290 SAT 28 ACT UTK is a good school but far from entering the ranks of an elite public. A low OOS admissions rate driven by solid but not exceptional academic stats demonstrates that the school is attractive not selective. |
Look at CDS and WL admits before believing their claimed admissions rate fur this year. |
Kids switch majors all the time. Tennessee over UVA? Nope. No way I would let my kid make such an idiotic choice. Maybe I am in the minority here, but an overall top 25 is a lot better than a school in the 100s! I don’t care what you major in. |
