Unbelievable that they chose him given the optics of going from two black women back to a white man, but hey, at the end of the day, what matters most is if he can turn this school district around or not.

If he is chosen, sounds like the board wants to be responsive to parents #1 issue: student safety.

What does he have to offer in that area?

Not sure where you're getting g that. He is known for neo-socialist policies like working with the IRS to do low income family taxes and mandating food closets in schools. That, and only that, is why he was chosen.

But what is the Dean of discipline actually going to do? MCPS has zero consequences for behavior except for the most serious offenses like bringing a weapon to school or being involved in a mega fight.

Presumably if you get a new super who is putting them into place, you are changing the policy to actually create disciplinary action with consequences for the behavior.

I don’t think a super can change policy. That is the Board of Education’s job.

Yeah but the BOE almost always just does what MCPS leadership proposes, so the superintendent has a huge impact on what the policies are, even if they don't technically set them.

Was just coming to post this. Not sure how someone from Stafford County is ready for the diversity and complexity of a massive county like MoCo. If he is the candidate, he’s in for one hell of a learning curve.

Stafford is smaller than MCPS but their diversity is very similar.

MCPS is majority white?

Both school districts are majority-minority.

White is a minority?
https://nces.ed.gov/Programs/Edge/ACSDashboard/5103660

This data shows them as similar: https://www.staffordschools.net/Page/33849

It does not.

Hispanic is largest in MCPS.

Largest in Stafford is white.
It's just a few percentage points. I know that means a lot to all the autists on DCUM but it really doesn't matter.

If it’s him it’s not the demographic percentages that are overwhelming, it’s the amount of population that make up those percentages and then what that means. He would be going from a schools system with 34 schools to one with 4 times many. He’ll be coming to a school system that is the largest in the state and the pressures and expectations that come along with that (like leading from the front on many MSDE and other legislative mandates). He’d be coming to a place where people are going to be much more vocal about what they see or what they want.

He’s got a PhD an MBA as well as time as both a Deputy and Super so maybe he’s got the skill set and leadership skills. But it’s still going to be drinking from a firehose on stage with very bright spotlights.
PP. I agree with you. But the most important factor in the success or failure of the new super will be whether (s)he sees the problems in MCPS and is willing to try to fix them or if they continue policies that focus 80% of the resources on the 20% of students who aren't even trying.

Agreed but there needs to be agreement on what problems need to be resolved and how. And a key thing will be Change Mgmt and implementation so that people come along. Because whether folks admit it, McKnight did/was addressing and bringing to light some key issues in MCPS that needed to be tackled.

Who was the superintendent nominee after Starr (I think) that got destroyed in the Court of Public Opinion and eventually removed his name -- or had it removed by BOE? It was an epic meltdown. I can't remember the details at this point.

What did the BoE emphasize in the announcement? I really hope he can put in place a new discipline policy and improve school safety.

Are you thinking about Andrew Houlihan in 2015?

Yes, it was Houlihan. I was just reading some of the threads from 2015 on him.

Seems like now he is the superintendent of a rural county in NC.

He emphasized safety in his remarks.
