New Super Being Announced Monday

If he has interviewed with the BoE saying he would create actual disciplinary measures rather than relying on RJ, and they choose to hire him, they be te going to clear the way for him to do that. Then if it doesn’t work out they will get rid of him.

But what is the Dean of discipline actually going to do? MCPS has zero consequences for behavior except for the most serious offenses like bringing a weapon to school or being involved in a mega fight.

Presumably if you get a new super who is putting them into place, you are changing the policy to actually create disciplinary action with consequences for the behavior.

I don’t think a super can change policy. That is the Board of Education’s job.

Correct. The super can't change policy, but they can change regulations, which are specifics on how policies are implemented.

That's why the Board of Education has watered down all the policies so they don't say anything anymore. All the power has shifted to the superintendent. The superintendent can do whatever they want from now on.

Restorative practices are written into the policy that the Board has set. I am not sure a superintendent can just avoid implementing that. Maybe I am wrong!

Most of those behaviors are already covered by our criminal code and a matter for MCPD. MCPS is a school system that isn't set up to dispense justice.

But MCPS doesn't call the police.

This is correct. My child was the victim of larceny at school. We were told that it was a police matter and advised that it was up to us to pursue it. They school admin strongly intimated that they hoped we would follow up with the police.

Here is the current policy - I think it is pretty broad - and it is also possible the board would further broaden it.

Sounds like this was controversial because the budget could have been spent on increasing teacher pay.

I’d actually be curious to see what HS and maybe NS teachers ghjnk about a discipline dean in their school as opposed to a small pay increase. My sense is that many would pick discipline over a small increase. I don’t think this would be useful in ES but maybe I’m wrong. A family member was the dean of discipline at a very troubled urban HS … knowing them. I can’t really imagine that they were great at it but they were at least a point person to interact with the police.

I think this would be needed at both the MS and HS level in MCPS. In our middle school, the inmates are definitely running the asylum.

Based on what I am reading from that article, I do think it's promising if they did go with him. They definitely need to put in place actual disciplinary measures. RJ is not working, and anyone who spends time in secondary schools on a daily basis knows it.

Schools have plenty of warm bodies that can address discipline. We just need actionable policies.

Everyone is saying it's the Stafford County guy.

Unbelievable that they chose him given the optics of going from two black women back to a white man, but hey, at the end of the day, what matters most is if he can turn this school district around or not.

If he is chosen, sounds like the board wants to be responsive to parents #1 issue: student safety.

It's not just a parents' issue. Staff have overwhelmingly and repeatedly said safety and security is their top concern too.
