Anyone else disappointed about graduation?

Wouldn't be surprised if there isn't some kick back money between mcps and the college
Was this a monifa era change?

Well that's the trouble with outdoor graduations, isn't it? Having a rain date is fine for a BBQ but a little more complicated for this kind of celebration.

MCPS contributes under $10,000 to each school regardless of class size and the school needs to provide the rest from senior fees or other funds. MCPS has rules you have to work within. It’s nuts.

Seems like that's the problem right there.

Is the school offering free transportation to UMBC or DAR for all of the graduating seniors? Our school did not. We had to pay for bus tickets to get a ride into DAR for our graduation. All I could think about was we have, like all schools, zoned in some very underprivileged families. I wonder how many kids miss graduation cause they can't afford to get downtown DC or Baltimore

Um like they do have tarps and tents for this reason.

My high school graduation got cut short when a thunderstorm rolled in during the diploma ceremony. My college graduation got postponed due to torrential rains. And my grad school graduation barely got started before it started pouring and we all had to run indoors. So I’m happy my DC is graduating indoors at UMBC.

None of us are excited to get up early and drive up to Baltimore for this impersonal graduation, and I don't even want to ask family to do this. My kid is already asking if they can just skip and sleep in. Is there a way to make this celebratory? Go to lunch afterwards?

You are right. The BOE cut an under the table deal to force MCPS families to Baltimore to promote the Baltimore campus. The graduation isn’t about your child, it is about administrators scratching each other’s backs. Your child can sense that this is not an event for them and they are right.

Graduations all over the country do this.

It's not just an MCPS thing. Mostly it has to do with numbers and what schools can accommodate inside the buildings ie number of people.

OP's family can do whatever they wish.

I would rather limit the number of people at graduation and have it at the school or nearby, than have I at a random place an hour away.

The only decent graduation I attended for any of my kids was the one for a doctorate degree. The rest are just cattle calls.

Because catonsville is not in MoCo or in an area surrounding this county. You should know by now, dcum does not want inconveniences - drive all the way to catonsville! even if they know the actual venue is ideal for this large of a gathering.

New Jersey has some large venues. Graduations should be there. It would be ideal.

As more HSs open in MoCo, who knows, MCPS may rent out space in a bigger state! If an arena is needed, did MCPS look into the downtown DC arena, whatever the name of that arena is these days, where Caps, Wizards play. It's on metro line, has parking garages. Too expensive?

And tons of restaurants at Chinatown or nearby.

Not us. My son's private school HS graduation was lovely. In a beautiful church chuck full of old traditions and wonderful opportunities to highlight students. As I read this thread, I am sad for MCPS seniors.

Same. My DS graduated at the Cathedral in Baltimore (twice) and it was lovely.
