Anyone else disappointed about graduation?

I graduated from Annandale high school in the 90’s and our graduation was held at the National cathedral. I get it why parents are so angry to be going to UMBC. I would be too!

Why would you be?

It's "venue"

You are right. The BOE cut an under the table deal to force MCPS families to Baltimore to promote the Baltimore campus. The graduation isn’t about your child, it is about administrators scratching each other’s backs. Your child can sense that this is not an event for them and they are right.

Promote the Baltimore campus? To kids who already have college plans set?? We were told it was just much cheaper than UMDCP.

Who told you that?

Blair Principal. DD was class of 20 which was the first year they were supposed to use UMBC...of course it never happened.

Our school admin heavily pushed UMBC under the guise of a survey of UMBC (yay from admin) or school stadium (boo from admin). It was set up in a very biased presentation. They weren't even subtle about the spin. Many of our students are from immigrant families, so maybe they figured they didn't need to be subtle, since many parents don't speak much English and may not know to question it.

Have any of you even been to umbc? The auditorium is actually quite nice. But let's face it, it could be made out of gold but the fact that it's umbc makes it not good enough for your baby. Hope you aren't spreading tiur negativity to your kids and mar rhus important day.

I'd remind my kid that the class of 2020 didn't get the chance to do it. It's not to be taken for granted.
It sounds awful and inconvenient but that's life and the memory is worth it.
My college graduation was outside and 105 degrees (no really). I was afraid my grandmother was going to die in that heat.
If I skipped it, I would have been miserable too.

Sometimes in life, showing up matters and I think this is one of those times.

I'm so disappointed by everything MCPS does. It's so out of control. Life is too hard since I gave up my triple-foam caramel lattes.

Huh?it's not a status issue. Most of us want our graduation at the school stadium.

MCPS probably won't care about DAR or UMBC, so you're opinions probably won't matter.

Only cares about their bottom line. Umbc was apparently cheaper. But factor in ALL those vehicles having to travel more than 5 miles to the venue and many buses need to be rented to transport students and staff.

To answer question in title, yes. It should stay in the county. No DC, no BalCo, no PGCo, no HoCo. MoCo. They should build or come up with space - open farm areas?

The majority of traditional high school’s are graduating at UMBC. The costs of graduating at home schools must be managed before this issue is resolved. Many of these costs (stage rental, chairs & setup) are paid to MCPS.

As has been said numerous times up thread, came down to cost and the few families insisting on getting more tickets so their family from out of country could attend.
