Not even hard...compared to other posts. Vandy easily unless money a big factor. It is the most elite the Boy got into.

Does student want to experience living away from NYC, or not? The cities of Richmond and Miami are very different. Where does student see themselves living for 4 years? Good luck and congrats!

If your kid is insanely smart but maybe not a savant, I'd go Williams, Rice, UCLA, Cal.

If your kid is a next-level prodigy, I'd consider UCLA, which is home to this generation's greatest mathematician (Terrance Tao).

Hmm tough if going to be in NYC after grad. Miami is up and coming but would do Fordham for alumni connections.

Econ, then Econ PhD

Money is not an issue

Everyone I know who went to Davidson loved it, caveat being they were all athletes.

Econ if interested in research and PhD, I would say UVA. I know many stories of some professor being friends with another professor at another school. The latter accepts the former's student because the personal recommendation is highly valued.

Agree.

This is a nice problem to have.

Williams will have the weakest Math/Applied Math program. Would choose Rice or Cornell over the UCs. Both UCLA and Berkeley have classes with more than 1500 students. They're fine for grad school, but undergrads are just cogs in the machine. Much better educational experience at Rice or Cornell.

! Somebody apparently unfamiliar with Williams. Order would be Williams, Rice, Cornell, UCLA, Cal...

Totally agree that Williams is the obvious choice, unless they want to work on the west coast (UCLA and Cal) or hang with gear heads (Rice and Cornell).

Williams all the way. My boss was a math major there and he loved his experience and is the smartest and most dynamic person I've worked with.

Yes, my son wants to live away from NYC, but not too far away. Both Miami and Richmond seem very convenient.
Between Miami and Richmond, which is better regarded for business?

Interesting that Cornell seems lower on the opinion scale here

Carnegie Mellon (BXA, loves both music mentors)
Boston U. (12k merit annually, loves 1 of the music mentors)
UMD (in state full merit tuition annually + FIRE program, loves 1 of the music mentors)

Kid values social aspect (wants to have fun as well), I value $ and closeness to home, would like to not be impressed with the name of the school (is that possible???

So tough. Of course, I want to say CMU, but when you value fun and money, that makes it tough.

Mine was admitted to UMD School of Music -- loved music mentor there, but wasn't totally committed to intensity BMus (hates all the ensemble requirements). Did not apply to CMU because, coming out of an intense magnet program, knew she didn't want another intense program experience. Ended up at Ivy, but it was a tough decision. UMD offered HC, academic money, NMS money, music dept money, essentially a little over full tuition. But, Ivy offered FA too, so not quite comparing that to full pay. That would be really hard.

It would be so hard to turn BXA down though. I feel for you. Maybe have kid talk to current CMU students to get a full sense of how intense it is and UMD students to see how they like program. CMU will open more doors, but UMD is also excellent. We also know a student at BU for BMus and (I think loving that). But, w/ only 12k merit, I'd be more inclined to go for CMU over BU if willing to pay that and OK w/ pressure climate. Good luck to you and congrats on the admits!

Grew up in Houston and kid is at Cornell. Aside from weather, I would say Cornell has more national name. Rice is great for engineering etc. and if you want to be in Texas/South.

Cornell definitely has a more recognizable name. Frankly, many people have not heard of Rice or have no idea that it's a great school--even college and grad school educated people. My own parents who went to Columbia (so they're not off the turnip truck) were like, "Rice? Where is that? Is it a good school?" They had no idea.
Not everyone is reading US News college lists.

I mean my kid went to Miami and got placed with big 3 Panamanian "business man" who was in the military there as a General starting at $125,000 a week. It could cost him an arm and a leg though if he doesn't do well placing product on the streets of Miami.
