DD science with a STRONG music component, the options are: Carnegie Mellon (BXA, loves both music mentors) Boston U. (12k merit annually, loves 1 of the music mentors) UMD (in state full merit tuition annually + FIRE program, loves 1 of the music mentors) Kid values social aspect (wants to have fun as well), I value $ and closeness to home, would like to not be impressed with the name of the school (is that possible??? ;)
So tough. Of course, I want to say CMU, but when you value fun and money, that makes it tough. Mine was admitted to UMD School of Music -- loved music mentor there, but wasn't totally committed to intensity BMus (hates all the ensemble requirements). Did not apply to CMU because, coming out of an intense magnet program, knew she didn't want another intense program experience. Ended up at Ivy, but it was a tough decision. UMD offered HC, academic money, NMS money, music dept money, essentially a little over full tuition. But, Ivy offered FA too, so not quite comparing that to full pay. That would be really hard. It would be so hard to turn BXA down though. I feel for you. Maybe have kid talk to current CMU students to get a full sense of how intense it is and UMD students to see how they like program. CMU will open more doors, but UMD is also excellent. We also know a student at BU for BMus and (I think loving that). But, w/ only 12k merit, I'd be more inclined to go for CMU over BU if willing to pay that and OK w/ pressure climate. Good luck to you and congrats on the admits!
