Very difficult to get admitted. DD was rejected last year (despite being a top student).
We toured the campus -- it was nice, but not amazingly beautiful like some colleges. Anecdote: Our campus tour guide (a young woman on a pre-med track) "joked" that the whole purpose of having Vandy in the SEC was to "bring up the average GPA." Other than that, it's an impressive place. One thing that I liked about the student presentations was that they seemed to feature a lot of students who were military brats -- they seemed very earnest and optimistic. |
Nashville's GDP is 187 billion ranked 27 in the nation. It's much easier to gain when the amount you have is lower than others. Atlanta is ranked 8th with 526 billion, and Houston is 7th with 633 billion. The opportunities in Nashville are nowhere near these two cities. |
The politics of TN do not align with most people on DCUM. No one wants to send their kids there unless they're an R or a D in name only. |
not politically. It's less geography and more politics that turns some people off. |
Both statements are true - N. Va people don't think it's in the South AND As someone OOS, Virginia is considered to be a southern state |
And yet, red state schools are more popular than ever…. I’m one of the PPs above whose kid is at Vanderbilt. I’m also a solid D, not in name only. Can’t stand TN politics but that was not the litmus test for DC to choose a school. And it turns out my kid likes not living in a bubble and having actual conversations with kids with different backgrounds and beliefs. I get if you were worried about state politics influencing the curriculum (e.g., UF), but that’s clearly not an issue at a school like Vanderbilt. |
No I'm worried about my kid living in a state with those politics. Your privilege makes you immune. Everyone is not a white hetero male. And if you sent your kid there who isn't those things, that is on you! Good luck in TN. |
NP. Can you explain what you are worried about regarding TN’s state politics? Is it abortion? Police profiling? Regarding abortion, i have a daughter and would not think twice about this. God forbid my daughter needed an abortion, it’s fairly simple to get her to another state where she can have the procedure. You ARE talking about a $90k school, where most people are indeed privileged so driving or flying to a blue state is not difficult for most. |
average job prospects. |

How hard is it to get into the Blair school of music? My kid has an audition there. Anyone have experience with it? |
After what happened in Charlottesville in 2017, more people OOS have thought of UVA and Virginia as southern. That was probably the most coverage the small town has had in decades and unfortunately shaped a lot of perceptions of the area. |
I know a few that are managers at gas stations |
I don't want to sound melodramatic, but this isn't necessarily true. Just look at Texas, where they're willing to let a woman bleed to death in the parking lot rather than performing a life saving procedure because of the new abortion restrictions. Not everyone knows they're pregnant right away and sometimes women find out by having an emergency. This isn't an issue for my daughter where she's going, but I don't think it's something that parents of daughters can be cavalier about or confident that they can manage. |
My experience (back in the day) was that plenty of the students in the A&S and engineering schools were hard working and had choices besides Vanderbilt. The Peabody College of Education was the more laid back of the undergrad offerings, so if you're referring to Peabody, I agree. |
