Really? I am actually excited to hear Georgetown parties. Do tell!! My DC refuses to even apply because they think the social life is boring compared to other comparable schools.

I think that poster must be harkening back to St. Elmo’s fires day. I’ve also heard that there isn’t much of a party scene and kids go to whatever bars will take their ids.

Wow! Y'all "hear" so much! LOL. There is a vibrant social scene at GU, but it is not what DCUM thinks it is. I will leave it at that.

You laugh, but my son (who attends a different school in Boston) dates someone from MIT and has told me some stories about the MIT parties he's attended...

Many people don't realize this but MIT has one of the highest per-capita rates of Greek life participation....

Greek life is not that important to the students at MIT. We are an MIT family. Greek life is more important at certain other schools (which I won't mention because people like to pile it on Students don't attend northern schools for tailgating and Greek life, on the whole. But you already knew that, or should have.

Ever been to Head of the Charles?
Gotta say that’s a tailgating exception. Be sure your silver service is polished for the Big Day.

So you are trying to say that the Head of the Charles is why people apply to a certain school? You make no sense.

Greek life is more important at certain other schools (which I won't mention because people like to pile it on to a couple schools on DCUM, and that school is one of them). When these threads are started, it seems that someone is just trying to stir the pot, or interject information on a topic they have not experienced first hand, and know very little about.

In general, Greek life is a more southern phenomenon, to this day. Students don't attend northern schools for tailgating and Greek life, on the whole. But you already knew that, or should have.

DP. This is hilarious. Tell that to all the party-crazy students at Michigan, Penn State, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Syracuse, Lehigh, Bucknell, Indiana, Boulder, Ohio (State and U), UCLA, UCSB, USC, Cincinnati, Delaware, Miami of Ohio, etc. Yes, you said "on the whole" - but that is still completely incorrect. There are major party schools in the north, midwest and west. Complete with big time Greek life.

I have a college freshman and she has several friends there. They are underwhelmed by the social scene and wish they went to a college with Greek life.

40% of MIT is in Greek life. -DP

Sort of. There is a culture at certain schools of going out a lot - meaning 6 days a week. I think it would be difficult for a kid to be in that culture if they are not going out a lot.

I will add - they may find their dorm to be empty even on a random Monday or Tuesday night.

I think this where the size of the school is a major factor - my DD is at Wisconsin, a notorious party school, but it's so huge that there are sooo many different kinds of students and while yes, there is a large contingent of those who go out 6 days a week, there's also plenty who do not. In fact, it's a whole thing for freshmen dorm location- the non-partiers/quieter kids usually choose to live in dorms on the lake, while the social, out-5-nights-a-week types know to choose a "southeast" dorm. It's also just a numbers thing...if, I don't know, 50% of the 36k undergrads at Wisconsin are huge into the party culture and you're not, that still leaves some 18k non-partiers for you to pick and choose from based on interests and personality. And since there are so many of them, there will (at least what we've found with Wisconsin) be loads of non-party opportunities, activities, etc. to get involved with. Whereas at a small school with 50% super partiers, that means you've got, in sheer numbers, fewer potential friends and such to do non-party activities with.

I’m surprised no one listed University of Texas. It belongs in these lists.

My school was a huge party school in the 1970s. In 1979 someone had idea to show Debbie does Dallas on movie night for 600-800 guys with free beer included.

We had 8 unrelated rapes on campus with one hour of movie ending. We had rapes all the time when I went there.

A party consisted of trash cans full of jungle juice which a lot of PathMart brand Koolaid, grain alcohol, Gordon’s vodka. Plus we had qualudes, pot, acid, hash and kegs of beer to wash it down.

Can be dangerous at a big party school of a teen girl even if not a party person
