What if your kid isn't a big partier? Does it really make a difference?
Sort of. There is a culture at certain schools of going out a lot - meaning 6 days a week. I think it would be difficult for a kid to be in that culture if they are not going out a lot.
I will add - they may find their dorm to be empty even on a random Monday or Tuesday night.
I think this where the size of the school is a major factor - my DD is at Wisconsin, a notorious party school, but it's so huge that there are sooo many different kinds of students and while yes, there is a large contingent of those who go out 6 days a week, there's also plenty who do not. In fact, it's a whole thing for freshmen dorm location- the non-partiers/quieter kids usually choose to live in dorms on the lake, while the social, out-5-nights-a-week types know to choose a "southeast" dorm. It's also just a numbers thing...if, I don't know, 50% of the 36k undergrads at Wisconsin are huge into the party culture and you're not, that still leaves some 18k non-partiers for you to pick and choose from based on interests and personality. And since there are so many of them, there will (at least what we've found with Wisconsin) be loads of non-party opportunities, activities, etc. to get involved with. Whereas at a small school with 50% super partiers, that means you've got, in sheer numbers, fewer potential friends and such to do non-party activities with.
