One Day on Netflix… bingeworthy

Hmm. I though Emma was really pretty, and smart, as well as down to earth. I can see why Dex was drawn to her vs. the basic, vapid, cookie-cutter girls he usually got caught up with.

Dex was "fine" looking. Again in posh, basic upper crust brit kind of way. But poor little rich boy bored with his life is not attractive.

But I 1000% understand why he was drawn to Emma.

Sure. Maybe you can identify, but it’s objectively a joke. FT said so. She’s sanctimonious and caustic

FT doesnt get it right this time.

Dex says in the show that he pretty much fancies everyone.

Its also established that he has worked his way through most of the girls at uni. It makes sense that she caught his eye at the graduation as she was not a conquest yet.

However the fact that she didnt sleep with him and they talked instead turned it from a potential forgettable one night stand into something longer lasting. He ells Emma in Greece that he would love to shag her but not looking for anything else. The hurt on her face was brilliantly done.

If you look at the female figures in Dex's life - he seems to need a strong female - his mum, Emma, even Sylvie to some extent.

He also plays Emma to some extent -kissing her after hes told her about his engagement and baby etc.

The whole series is a slow courtship of each other.

This. Emma in the series didn't show anything that would make his attraction to her make sense. She was unattractive, whiny, humorless, and aimless. Anne Hathaway did a much better job in this role. I will say that the series did get better after the first couple episodes. The actor who played Dex knocked it out of the park.

The actress who played Tilly did a great job. She was bubbly, fun, sensual. It was easy to see how a guy could be really attracted to Tilly. Looks don't have to be even, but generally there's something else like personality, money, accomplishments, responsibility, or *something* that makes the hot, wealthy person fall for the much less attractive one.

I think some of this may be a British vs. an American sensibility. Emma is sharp and witty, and that seems to count for more in British circles than American circles. She's not conventionally attractive, but she's not ugly, either, and an attraction to someone who's not conventionally attractive is what makes Dex more interesting as well. If he's just falling for a beauty, he seems more vapid (and he first hooks up with Sylvie, who is quite gorgeous, when he's still clubbing and living a posher, more debauched, life).

I think it might be the difference between a guy who's deep and a guy like Dex who's... not. A posh, good-looking guy who reads and has a plan for the future--of any nationality-- is going to be more interested in a woman's personality and intelligence. That's not Dex though (at least so far--I haven't finished it).

They are just physically a huge mismatch plus she’s not that smart - she’s bookish, sarcastic and just massively annoying because she’s so defensive. Had they cast a pretty Indian girl with an ounce of charm it would have been far more enjoyable

I think she is a brilliant Emma.

I agree. Ambika made Emma, Emma. Ann Hathaway played it in movie and she wasn't half as good.

Emma's character is so quirky, intelligent and funny, so unique in so many ways.

No. It was a three person team. Him, Emma and the director.

Dex has to say he fancies everyone. Because how the f do you explain he does anything other than occasionally bonk caustic and unattractive Emma when he’s drunk?

Then from that he slings caffs and is head over heels? No way

Are you serious? I mean I know this is a hymn to the unattractive girls everywhere but that’s not plausible.

Agree! A guy that classically good - looking would never go for a girl like Emma with her mustache, big nose and big teeth.

The poor actress is a lot more fun and good looking in real life, but even so says there’s something not right like for example her eyelids are too short for her eyeballs and can’t close

Eh?
I dont think Ambika is unattractive at all - quite the contrary.

I hope by the time the Emmys roll around next year this series isn’t forgotten and Leo Woodall gets the award. You can insult the premise of the book/series and attack Ambika Mod’s appearance if you want, but this kid acts his ass off and basically carries the series.
