9 year old daughter is petite

In what crazy world do you live in that 50th percentile is PETITE? You are insane, OP. Your poor child, you have given her a complex about her average and normal height.

Op here - wow this thread is way more active than I thought it would be.

I clearly don’t know what qualifies as petite. FWIW I am also Asian. Most Asians I know are small in stature.

Oh please. An Asian woman would NEVER call someone your daughter's size petite (of course this also very much depends on where in Asia you are from).

My 7 yo is 45” you have a giant 3 year old.
See how comparing kids isn’t helpful? Why are you comparing your children? Why did you teach her short is bad? She doesn’t seem petite. You also seem concerned about her height, sad.

I feel sorry for your daughter.

This is actually worth a lot because you’re revealing some unhealthy cultural biases that I hope you can overcome before your DD is older.

The only people I know (including my own relatives ) who are obsessed with proving their daughters are small/tiny/petite are Asian. Please drop this and keep it in your head. It’s not healthy and even more unhealthy since your daughter is totally average sized when compared to children of all backgrounds. Small is not better or aspirational. It’s just a neutral state of being, so stop aspiring to proving that your DD is “petite.”

What can I say to help her? She actually eats the best out of my 3 kids. I just think genetics aren’t on her side. She takes after the women on DHs side and they are all very short. DH is 5’10” and I am 5’7”. The other two kids take after my side of the family height wise and will most likely be much taller than oldest child.

Well my 9 year old daughter is 47 inches and 47 pounds so I guess you can tell her that there are even smaller kids out there than she is and they are perfectly fine. My daughter is totally confident in who she is.

Anonymous wrote:Op - yes she is on her normal growth curve. Below the 50%. I think the problem is all her friends are so much bigger than her both height and weight. She feels like she “will never get bigger”. Also the real kicker is her 7 year old sister will be larger than her soon. That seems demoralizing to her.

She will probably end up being 5’1-5’3 as a worst case scenario. I’m 5’3 and 100 pounds. I have a master’s from Columbia, a great job, three kids, played a varsity sport in college, etc Don’t give her a complex about being “small”. She’ll probably end up being slightly shorter than average and no one will notice or care.

It’s really mind-boggling that parents brag about height and body type to anyone at any stage of their child’s life.

I bet that OP is the type who brags to anyone who will listen about how gigantic her youngest is. Poor older DD.
