Masking on Planes

I spent two weeks in Germany and Denmark over the Thanksgiving holidays and returned last weekend. I'd estimate in public no more than 1 out of 50 may still be masking and most were Asian tourists (and even most Asian tourists aren't masking). On planes it was maybe 2 or 3 people masking out of the entire flight. Four flights involved. None of the airline staff are masking. Fewer people are masking in Germany and Denmark than in Washington.

If none of the airline staff are masking that tells me wearing masks on planes doesn't make a difference in whether you get sick or not.

Mask op who cares if others don’t

Trip Europe 2 weeks masked attendees stayed non mask sick after three days home

You do the math

Some posters here are implying that they are more likely to put their masks on if they see others doing the same. Which is silly.

If you’ve had Covid a few times, you are probably more at risk to more severe illnesses and quite likely have a compromised immune system. A great reason to mask.

I stand by my no answer. I don’t think OP was asking if I’ve ever seen a person in a mask on a plane, but rather what people are doing generally.

I’ve been flying 1-2 a month since spring. Very, very few people are masking.

I am not masking either, and I haven’t had covid in two years.

Probably depends on your destination. Where were you going?

It doesn't help to call other people dumb. But the poster did raise an interesting point. If people are at higher risk of getting COVID or even other viruses on planes, then why aren't airline staff or airport staff masking? Because they don't. And they're in that tiny tube all the time, which you'd think would substantially increase the risks of getting COVID.

I can see the logic in thinking that we're crowded cheek by jowel on these flying tubes therefore we're at a higher risk of viruses including colds. But I'm not sure if that is entirely true. I do remember some talk in the early days of COVID how no outbreaks was traced to a flight itself.

Given that people still get COVID and flus and colds without travel and there's no data showing you're more likely to get it while traveling, the ultimate conclusion is that you wear covid masks to make yourself feel better, so there is an element of theatre about it.

All over US and multiple international destinations.

I can't do the math if I can't even understand what you wrote.

He/she went to Europe for two weeks (allegedly) the people who masked didn't get sick while those who didn't mask got sick after three days at home. Presumably after they came back from Europe.

As someone who genuinely was in Europe for two weeks recently I do wonder if the Danes and Germans obsess over getting COVID as much as DCUM does because I saw very few masking. Judging from the conversations on the plane, it was heavily Icelandic, Danish and German, and the only person I saw masking were a late middle aged American couple and a 20 something American girl of the activist type (dyed hair to match).

I advise you do mask, lots of covid going around right now. It's in our high school, bad. My kid missed a week of school but now is cleared by the doctor to go back to school - and on planes. She'll be masked but lots of people don't care if they are positive anymore. "It's just a cold".

We were just in Spain I think I saw less than a handful of people on the flight there and back with masks.

I work with a lot of European colleagues and it seems they’re all sick with Covid or getting over it. They seem to be getting it more than the rest of us. So I don’t think they obsess but neither are they healthy necessarily.

masking is to prevent the spread of your sickness to others not the other way around

LMAO. Where does it matter where PP is going? Does COVID only strike on flights bound for Hawaii? Does it skip flights to London? You people act like this virus is sentient. I know you're trying to argue for your 'masks forever' feelings, but the world has moved on and acting like COVID is a smart virus and stays away from Chicago-bound airplanes makes you look clueless.
