No, it is about geography. PG county is closer to Potomac Yards than parts of Fairfax. But neither are convenient for people who live in the northern and western suburbs of both VA and MD. That is why it makes sense to keep the teams and venue in town, so everyone has about the same travel to get to it. Stop ascribing motive to other people's words. |
Politicians love white elephants |
So far, it is only Virginia because the team ownership is asking DC to chip in a half billion dollars for an upgrade. The arena is only 25 years old and they have done three city funded upgrades in the last 8 years. |
| Wizards and Caps don't want their fans carjacked or robbed for their coats, etc. Makes perfect sense. Hope VA puts up border checkpoints to keep the rabble from DC out. |
So it only makes sense for everyone to suffer, because equity?! Why? |
See how much the fan base drops when you move the team to Virginia. As an example, look at what happened to the "DC" NFL team. Within 5 years, Dan Snyder not withstanding, fan interest and attendance at Raljon, fell off the cliff. |
The DC NFL team isn't in Virginia and fan interest remained strong until Snyder did his best to destroy it. Even that took a decade. The majority of the Capitals season ticket holders live in Virginia. Maybe the calculation is that, even if the lose MoCo fans, they will pick up more Virginia fans who don't want to deal with living in the city? Right now Virginia is the largest state without a professional sports team. Perhaps it makes more sense than Maryland (which has 3) or DC (which currently has 3). Even if you just look at Nova vs. DC or MoCo/PG- Nova has 3 million, DC has 675k, and PG + MoCo is 2 million |
Within five years of FedEx opening (2002) the Redskins grew to become the #1 most valuable sports franchise in the world, at that time they had the highest attendance in the NFL. I guess if you are going to make an incorrect statement you might as well be completely wrong. |

Why? The value propostion between a football team and stadium and hickey/basketball/concerts are completely different.
The mayor has literally dropped the ball on this. Compensating for a worse deal for football will just compound the problem. |
That's all you got? Oh well. If you think Marylanders in mass are going to make this stand then more power to you. But literally, it's probably just as easy to get to Potomac Yard from MoCo (you can take AL bridge to parkway or 495 all the way around to route 1 or telegraph) then it is to literally drive through all of DC to get to Judiciary Square/Chinatown. Potomac Yard and Cap One arena are about 3 miles apart. You pitching a fit over 3 miles, then stay home. |

And just yesterday people on this board were telling me this was all a negotiating ploy and no move was going to happen... |
|
But how will feral DC youth attend Caps/Wizards games if they have to go all the way to Virginia? What about equity?! |
| Don’t for a second think the Russians and Putin do not have anything to do with this travesty. They would like nothing more than to embarrass the President by moving our teams out of the District. |
