If you retired you, what do you say when people ask what you do for a living?

yeah you can. not super uncommon. people have high incomes and decent investments and/or sell a company they made. just say you do 'consulting' in your old field you retired from. people don't ask too many questions.

I’m a married man and say “I married well” and smile!

Sure you can retire at these early ages if you are financially secure. Retirement is about being financially secure not just your age. There are many people that will work up to the day they die as they cannot afford to retire.

No... it's still not o.k. with society if you are not working as a woman ... even if you are 55. You still get lots of stunned people who don't know what to say. I know this from personal experience. It's not sexist -- because people treat women the way your husband experiences it. It's AGE-IST. Or maybe just work-centric. I don't know what to call it.

The financially secure early retired do not care what you think. We are busy enjoying our life. We worked smarter.

This! My DH and I are consultants who made a lot as 1099 contractors billing by the hour. Haven’t worked a W-2 job in over 20 yrs as my consulting biz was 3 times more lucrative. I now still consult periodically to help out friends or former clients if needed. Don’t need the work. Love the freedom! Retired early.
