Harvard of South - Emory, Duke, Rice or Vanderbilt?

Anonymous
Gettysburg College is often called the Harvard of Adams County..

Why would this possibly matter?

In the least?

None, but Vandy carries more clout than Harvard in certain sets. Harvard grad = weird anomaly, versus Vandy grad = wealthy southern prep. I'm sure some will disagree, but not if you're familiar with these type of people.

1. Duke is comfortably the best school in the bottom half of the country.
2. Duke, nor any top school, cares about being the “Harvard of X.”

Eh. Times change. Would not agree that Duke is comfortably the best school in the South. Would totally agree that neither is interested in being the "Harvard of the South."

We toured both. Kid liked Vanderbilt a lot more. Better vibe.

Just because your kid liked Vandy more, doesn’t mean Duke isn’t the best school in the South. It’s pretty indisputable that the Duke name carries the most weight not just in the South, but nationally.

At one point, there was even talk of a league of elite Southern schools playing the Ivy schools in sports. However, that was nixed by the Harvard president who thought they would lose.

That said, Duke and Vanderbilt are probably more like the Ivies than Emory or Rice. Emory doesn’t have the stats, ranking or prestige and Rice is too one-sided with tech, though they offer other majors.

Everyone forgets this now, but the Ivies were once regional schools. In fact, even today, most schools - even the best - have a strong regional bias both in student demographics and post-graduation jobs.

Could you not be more try hard. Emory is T25

Emory is great school but not in the same league as Duke Vanderbilt or Rice.

Duke is not really "of the South".

Why not? North Carolina is the South, as is the DMV.

How many cities claim to be the Venice of the North? Many. Copenhagen. Hamburg. Stockholm.
Doesn’t really mean anything. Like cities, each school has their own pros and cons. Best choice is best fit…

Vandy and Rice are not the same level as Duke. Stop trying to put them there. Vandy Rice and Emory are the same level. And they have the same reputation score on US News as well, so clearly college admin thing they're the same.
