Wow.

Well, this thread has been pretty good at recognizing that wish with several posts recognizing his efforts to help others.

RIP, Matthew Perry.

+1 Everyone in my immediate family, regardless of age, is appreciative of his efforts and feels very sad that he has passed away.

(His Jacuzzi was the size of a swimming pool so this does fit)

This is why they have lifeguards at the warm up pool at the Olympics swimming events. Anything can happen. They have had to rescue a few synchro swimmers who have passed out.

When Friends was coming to an end and before Perry's addiction problem was publically known, I remember Larry King commenting that he could envision Matthew Perry having a career like Tom Hanks-- starting with a light, comedy hit sitcom but growing into film career with weighty, dramatic roles and everything in between. It was insightful at the time, because we hadn't really seen Perry in those serious roles yet and seen the range and gravitas he could bring. While Hanks has not been overtly political, he has been active on non-partisan issues, like recognition of the Greatest Generation. With his recovery in the last few years, you could see Perry making an important contribution.

I also loved Studio 60 so much. It gave a great taste for Perry's potential as a more serious actor. Of all the shows ever cancelled too soon, that was one of the biggest losses.

That's a terrible photo at the height of his addiction to pain pills. "I weighed 155lbs on my way to 128lbs.'

Everyone, let me remind you that the DCUM tradition is that the first 48 hours after a death are a period of celebration and mourning. There will be a time to discuss topics such as drug addiction. Today is not that time so please refrain from such posts.

RIP. Like so many others, I loved him growing up watching Friends. He was funny and so handsomely adorable.

WaPo should pull that obit and rewrite it in light od the post above to focus on the tremendous work Matthew did to help people with addiction. It says more about his teen acting work than the way he helped others.

Earlier today I thought the same thing: that he could have had a career like Tom Hanks. He was really so good at his craft. It's heartbreaking that his work was cut short.
