Yes, it's better to not hear from anyone about their lives and the impacts this or that has on them. We don't want to hear about ordinary people! Silence their voices!

This isn't about ordinary people. I'm the OP and I do have a scar and it's never occurred to me to be upset about this. I rarely think about my scar and I suspect ordinary people don't think much about this type of thing.

So people with facial scars are not ordinary people. Got it. And you think no one ever stares at them, that they can just walk down the street without being stared at or having little kids ask their moms, what's wrong with him? And you think that shouldn't bother them?

I have a major, visible congenital deformity and I get stared at all the time and have heard that question a million times. It wears on a person. I think about my deformity every single day, primarily because the reactions of other people won't let me not think about it. So I have sympathy for this person. Sorry you don't. But it sounds like you don't really experience the same thing in your daily life.

... like I have a facial scar. I literally never think about it.

Is it giant and red and does it run across your entire face and is it something that people either stare at or quickly look away from with visible discomfort?

Your experience is not universal. Why do you think it is?

It seems really sad to do away with a very non harmful part of the human experience. FWIW don't know a lot of scar masks that are to make fun of people who are disfigured. Some scary and non scary pop figures are scarred...I can think of very few honestly who are incredibly disfigured? Should we also go after witches with big noses and warts, because some people have big noses and warts?

Actually the whole Halloween thing should be cancelled as it makes light of what is a serious holiday for many pagans. It really is cultural appropriation at its finest. The way ignorant people “celebrate” the day is hurtful to so many. Don’t forget the pagans have been a persecuted and oppressed group for centuries.

Are you serious?

No, they’re not. They’re just trying to get you all riled up. Same as the OP of this thread.

Same as the people like the ones who like to use phrases like “woke” and “oppression porn.” Some of you are actively looking for reasons to be upset. Just go ahead and complete your metamorphosis and start watching Fox.

The ones actively looking for reasons to be upset were listening to NPR's Halloween costume advice.

What did NPR actually advise? Please cite the exact line in the story where the reporter advises listeners to modify their Halloween costumes. Do not cite one of the 2 people interviewed telling their views, one of which was "it was a gut punch when kids told me my face was scary" and the other was "if you're trying to dress as a disfigured person as opposed to a fantasy figure like a Zombie, you might want to rethink." Those two aren't speaking for NPR any more than a GOP politician is when he is interviewed.

What did the NPR reporter actually say?

Thanks for playing along. I'm sure you won't answer because your characterization of this brief piece is intentionally trying to stoke faux-outrage.

OFGS. Your invisible scars are not the equivalent of someone with a huge slash across their face/eye. You are disgusting for saying it.

You're basically saying you find it ridiculous that this person who is tired of being stared at and seeing her disfigurement used as a sign of evil or ugliness should just suck it up baby and never speak out about her pain. Because after all, you have a scar no one can see so really, same thing.

I'm more worried about your inner scars. Try forgiveness.

We get it. You don't have compassion or interest in other perspectives. You don't care if something you do is insensitive.

The whole point of many of these perspectives is to alert people like you that what you deem "non harmful" may not be considered "non harmful" by others.

But you just go ahead and keep walking around with your head up your butt.

I know quite a few fundamentalist Christians who would agree with you that Halloween should basically be abolished. They want us all to sit around praying all day. You want us to sit around going "ahh... poor thing!" all day. Both of you have a very strong desire to police the behavior of others.

WTF. Neither the woman in the article nor I am asking anyone to cancel Halloween.

I know people like you who deal only in extremes. You cannot process nuance. You can't be asked to think in complex ways.

In this case, you should be thinking...it's fine to have a Halloween costume and Halloween is fun, but as time has gone on, we have all started to learn that some things we don't think about as offensive or hurtful are actually hurtful to others. Still, there are so many options for fun Halloween costumes that aren't hurtful. Let's pick one and go trick or treating. Yay.

Instead you are whining. You poor thing, having to stop and think about someone other than yourself Boooooooooooo Hoooooooo.

When a news source chooses a program to broadcast, the interviewer doesn't typically give advice. The listener is typically able to comprehend the purpose and intent of the interviewer and program, based on the questions, responses, and information provided.

So hidden that NPR always interviews GOP Republicans you are saying they endorse the message those Republicans convey? Ok.

DP. Your own post was simplistic.

Oh no someone asks you to be considerate and thoughtful of others. Such an extremist request tantamount to policing you!

My kid was born with a big port wine stain birthmark on the side of his face that used to constantly get commented on, and for which he often got teased or bullied over.

He had rounds of laser treatment and now it's gone to the point where I hadn't even thought of it in years until this post came up.

I don't think there's anything wrong with costumes and makeup. The far more insidious thing is bullying and harrassing people for the scars or birthmarks or deformities they have IRL. Focus more on that, than on make-believe.

Of course it's a (pretty) woman of color.

God forbid they cover a white male Marine who was disfigured protecting the country her parents swam a cross a river to run to.

Can my kid dress up as a police officer?

Or will you spit on her?
