Thoughts on putting down Hispanic when from Spain?

I think you mean cajita, and of course.

No. The Federal government, and many state governments, include people from Spain as Hispanic.

nah. they just use other factors and their essay ?s which basically ask you to tell them your race/minority status.

What about the National Hispanic Recognition award from the PSAT? Will they consider that?

DS listed it (and AA recognition) along with NMSF on his common app.

^^ DS is multiracial (Anglo, Latino, and AA). Both parents are mixed (Anglo/Latino and AfroLatino)

That's not the same thing that's immoral. Yall colonized and enslaved them.

I’ve had a hard time with my Hispanic son and the racial box. He thinks of himself as white hispanic and presents that way, but his genetic data shows what a true mix he is.

It’s been awkward convincing him to share his other heritage.

Mine listed it too - National Hispanic Recognition Program for high PSAT scores. They have South American heritage.

As long as colleges continue to factor in race and ethnicity, people are going to check the boxes that are available to them. I personally think income should be the only thing that matters. Because there are a lot of very high income blacks and hispanics who really don't need any boost at all that are checking boxes. But I don't make the rules.

There is no racial box, idiots.

SC ruled against AA last year.

Same. I have a kid who is Anglo, Latino, AfroLatino but is white presenting with light hair and light eyes.

I told him to check the box - his last name is also a typical Latino name (like Lopez or Suarez).

I know of a girl of Spanish descent with a last name that would be common in Mexico. She got into a T20 ED but isn’t the most compelling candidate or best student. No more box checking but her last name couldn’t be more “Hispanic.” She probably wrote an essay related to her Hispanic heritage.

To be clear:

(1) You are responding to an older thread, from 2023, just after SFFA. The thread was bumped for no good reason whatsoever, yet no one seems to notice.

(2) The boxes remain in Common App. College admissions offices do not see these data fields when reviewing apps. The data are collected so that colleges can comply with federal reporting requirements for the enrolled class - this is how they get the info for the Common Data Set.

This. American racial categories are so f*cked up.

Blame the white supremacists who made someone's skin pigmentation a "bad" thing.
