Do you think they haven’t seen your comments and utter speculation about what is happening? Please for the sake of these kids stop posting wild theories about what has happened. The entire team is in the dark but we will patiently wait for for Principal Johnson to give us some information to proceed. While I don’t think this was the intention, Principal Johnson’s letter and the wording of the letter has made these kids feel shame. Do you really want to add to that? You’re the grown-ups. This is gossip and complete speculation before you know anything. You are not going to solve the mystery by saying things like, “my money is on sexual offense.” DC Urban Moms and Dads is this really what this forum is for because you are causing pain, anxiety, fear and stress to these children.

I’m sorry your kids are upset. Why are they on DCUM? My own 9th grader wouldn’t even consider looking here or anywhere. but after a message like that obviously there is speculation. It’s normal. I’m sure your kids are speculating too and the anxiety related to related to not knowing, not the fact that others are speculating too.

DP. Ah, yes. Blame the victim. Typical dcum response. Please have a little respect for once and just shut it.

I'm not the PP, but avoiding things that cause you pain is actually a really important life lesson for these kids. For all kids. There are going to be things out in the world that people find to distressing. For whatever reason. We can put trigger warnings on them and let them know this is coming, and that allows them to decide whether or not they wish to consume that content. In this case, it's clear that the content is going to be distressing because the site is all about speculation and the memo from the principal is vague.

Please try to help your kids build some resilience by identifying media that is upsetting, and cutting it out rather than asking other people to stop making it.

I think of media as legit journalism, not salacious parents on a chat board. Don't defend bad behavior. While some were just concerned, others are throwing all sorts of conjecture out there. I would not defend that as "making media."

There’s actually been very little speculation on this thread.

Look at the first page. I agree there's not a ton, but it isn't "very little " either. There's no need for any of it.

So you're new here, huh?

Not that you're wrong but MCPS has a lot more pressing matters to tend to.

NP - I think MCPS should have a top priority to keep their students safe. That includes protecting them from child predators.

Any update on this? It has been a couple of weeks.

As a parent of a crew kid. No update. The school continues to stay silent and not respond to the requests for information from the team. The coaches are new and the kids are being forced to walk almost a mile in this heat wave to catch their bus at a local park which cuts into their practices. The only ones loosing out are the kids. It is heartbreaking. Until they come out with any information we are all in the dark. This has been a huge hit to the morale of an already under resourced team. Just because authorities are contacted does not mean they were warranted. We are all waiting to hear back.

Why don't you pick up the kids and drive them the mile?

Why would they? A mile is easy walking distance. No wonder we’re in a climate crisis if you think driving to school to drive your kids a mile is a reasonable use of a car or your time.

You are not doing yourself any favors here complaing that the kids have to walk in the heat. Haven’t the soccer and football teams been practicing outside in the heat? Maybe the kids could get creative, leave bags at school or in someone’s car and use that 1 mile as a warm up run. When I rowed in college we did a ton of running.

I think the previous poster’s point is that the rowers and the team as a whole are being negatively impacted in a multitude of ways, while there hasn’t even been a clear charge against the team. If there is a legitimate allegation, investigating it is important, but the allegation should be clearly stated and the investigation should be conducted and concluded efficiently. Allowing rampid speculation is absurd and very hurtful to those who are a part of this team but have absolutely no negative involvement and no idea what this is about. Is it even an allegation that involves current rowers, or could it be from the past?

Exactly. The parents who are saying walking a mile is no big deal can "take a walk". This is a ridiculous situation where the school has provided no information about the allegations and there is no timeline to when it will be resolved. Sad for the kids.

My friend showed me a letter that MCPS sent to crew parents last week. The letter tells parents that the team is operating and that parents should contact the team about practice details, coaches, or whatever. The letter doesn't even mention an investigation at all, aside to say that if there were an investigation, MCPS would cooperate. I think it's questionable whether the team is even under investigation based on the language. I wonder if the allegations were rumors that were dropped when nothing was found to support them. Typical MCPS to drop a bomb and then be completely unclear. No wonder everyone is frustrated about this.

Parents can drive their kids like the rest of us do. This is a private club so if MCPS will not allow it on property that's their decision. MCPS does not provide buses for HS under 2 miles. It's a nightmare for some of us living right under that.

Not surprised a white collar sport didn’t have the appropriate culture and is floundering there.
