Can you get off the floor without using your hands?

Not at 51. Both my husband and son, who are 6'2" can do it.

Yes. I am 61.

55 and I can do this but it’s much easier for me if I uncross my legs to stand up. I still don’t use my hands or knees. Does technique matter?

You can't use the side of your leg either. So I don't know how you would do it if your legs were uncrossed.

dp.. from what I read, the test indicates that you can/should start standing with your legs already crossed.

DH is 6'+, terrible balance, and he can't do it, but he's in much better physical shape than I am. He exercises a lot more than I do.

I read that being able to squat all the way down is also a good indication of flexibility and strength.

Agree! Plus flexibility. My DH could not do it as well. He looked perplexed as he tried. I’m low to the ground (short) and flexible and popped right up.

Yeah I'm going to guess this is like the wolf turn in gymastics where it favors people who are not only strong, but also short.

I have a 35” inseam and couldn’t do this even though I work out 90 minutes a day 5 days a week, so I have to wonder if there’s something to this…

My guess is poor core strength here, not your inseam.

Meh. After 3 kids I feel like I’m lacking in core strength. I easily did this. I actually laid flat on the floor and easily bent forward and stood up without hands, knees, or any momentum. I’m pretty sedentary but I am thin.

I think flexibility is key. I spend most of my time sitting Indian style/cross cross and I can still do a split. I’ve noticed that after 40 not many of my friends can sit that way. I easily can touch my toes and can put my whole palm down. I’ve never done yoga but do dance often.

I’m 45

I'm 57 and seriously overweight (5'7" and 230lbs).

I can do this with no problem but I do come up to my knees and then standing. But no hands.

Can't figure out how to do this w/o alighting on my knees at all but I'll work on that. (Tore a meniscus a few years back so am generally cautious w/ knees though.)

58 man. Just tried it. No issues. Sitting down much easier. Lots pressure on ankles getting up however…

I wonder if it is also technique? I am one of the out-of-shape yogis, but just put the heel of one foot right next to my behind, then just push off on that, and as I straighten leg, shift weight onto my other foot.

Just sit on the floor from a standing position without using your hands, arms, or knees to slow your descent. Then stand back up—without using your hands, arms, or knees to help boost you back up, if possible.

This confuses me a lot

What part is the confusing part? Seems like you understand everything.

My 6'2" DH just sat down no problem. Darn him!! He's an average weight, never works out and is not at all flexible. Couldn't get up without a knee, though.

I easily do this with no hands or knees. I’m pretty flexible and 5’9” and slender. I have never done yoga but I work out moderately. Mainly though, I always sit on the floor Cora’s legged. I prefer it to sitting on chairs and always have. I teach kid classes for preschoolers too and am always on the floor and up and down. 43 female

51, female - I can do this very easily, especially getting up (probably because this is usually how I get up from a cross legged position on the floor every day after I've done some core work - I don't normally just drop to the floor from a standing position). I'm normal weight, not very flexible.

I can get up from cross legged position without using my hands, no problem. I have a bad knee so it actually requires me using primarily one leg for both strength and balance. The other leg mostly stays out of the way.

But thanks to that bum knee I can’t get up from kneeling or squatting without using my hands, and usually something higher than the floor (a chair, a wall).

46, walk a lot, occasional yoga.
