Thoughts on the University of South Carolina?

USC offers a $15.5k scholarship for anyone who makes marching band. DC is planning to do marching band, but we decided not to apply to USC. However, I had a positive impression from my research and could not find any comparable marching band scholarship anywhere.

Scholarships and out-of-state tuition reduction
Each member of the Carolina Band receives a $500 scholarship for participation. In addition, all out-of-state full-time Carolina Band students who are not already receiving a tuition reduction from other scholarships or sources on campus receive a tuition reduction for the fall and spring semesters of the 2023-2024 academic year. Based on the 2023-2024 tuition rates, this waiver reduces out-of-state tuition from $17,267 per semester and $34,534 per year to $9,517.25 per semester and $19,034.50 per year. Minimum academic requirements apply.

So you wouldn’t send you kid to any state school in a red state? What about purple states? What if the school is in the red part of a blue state?

What if it is a private school in a red state?

Ridiculous.

And ridiculous to think your tuition is funding the politics of the state.

Threads like these would be informative if there were a way to filter out all the Dobbs dorks.

I suspect you don't care to hear my actual responses, so I will just say my child and I have weighed these options and come up with a list of schools that are acceptable to us. One is only acceptable given the proximity to a state line.

How dare your kid want to go to a pro life school.

But aren’t all colleges pro life?

It is not like the aborted fetus get to go to college?

Once he got there as a freshman (and he had visited before applying) he found he really didn't like it. Felt the social customs were very southern in a way he didn't like (wrt to dating, race relations, views toward Jewish students, 'you're a guest here' attitude toward non-Southerners), didn't think the academics were serious, didn't like the setting. He worked hard, got great grades his freshman year, and transferred to a northeastern university for sophomore fall (ironically one of those schools whose winter climate DCUM commenters complain about incessantly....). He had a great three years at the second school and just graduated (on schedule) last spring.

Bottom line: yes, more kids from the DMV are going to South Carolina. Some presumably like it, but not all do. But don't pretend it's "just like here but with balmier weather and easier admissions" because it isn't.

Isn’t college about getting out of the bubble?

Out of one and into another. Pick your bubble wisely.

Because you’re so much better than they are?
