I think that nearly *all* GoFundMe campaigns are tacky

The reality is that, even in those perfect Scandinavian countries, no one individual is getting millions of dollars worth of medical care for “free.” They just let people die instead.

Much better to ration health care by the ability to pay

+1. Don't even get me started on million dollar + NICU babies who go on to have a lifetime of medical issues that we (taxpayers) also pay for through Medicaid.

Yeah, who cares about babies anyway? Let the useless eaters die.

Yeah, who cares if they have any quality of life at all as long as we keep them alive to make their parents happy!!!

Its not "euthanasia" to NOT spend 7 figures to keep alive a baby that is the size of a human hand alive and will likely go on to experience a whole host of issues. THIS (among other things) is why health insurance is unaffordable in this country. Because we are routinely keeping 750 gram micropreemies alive.

FFS. You're surrounded by people who were veery premature everyday. You just can't tell them apart from anyone else.

Okay well how about the people who want to pay for micro preemies pay into one health insurance pool and those of us who don't can pay into a different health insurance pool. Same for crazy expensive end of life care and cancer treatments that prolong someone's life by a month or two while making them very very sick. I'd like to be in the shared risk pool that DOESN'T pay for those things (and won't cover them for me or my loved ones either.)

Be thankful you don't have health issue. It could be you one day. I'm on expensive medications. What should I do, just suffer?

PP is saying no to futile care and being honest with people when there’s no hope left. Also acknowledging that “trying anything” and hoping for a miracle is incredibly costly and can result in a lot of needless and ultimately futile suffering.

Any health issue could be considered that.

+1

I mean why reserve the cruelty for only the preemies? We could save lots of money by not treating cancer, not feeding anyone with a brain injury or dementia, refusing dialysis for kidney patients. The options are endless.

Which is what happens in those utopian countries. They send you home with painkillers if you’re sick.

Um, I live in one of those countries and that's not what happens at all.

States provide funds for burials.

No, they don't.

They absolutely do. But I don’t believe you get a burial plot; you are in a communal burial area (at least in the state of MD).

She has no means of making a living, she had the bariatric surgery, but then there's the skin surgery - it has to be millions on her, meanwhile there are kids in this country that can't see a dentist. I dunno. There has to be a limit somewhere.

THIS. And the fact that we can’t discuss this, and micro preemies (which seem to get smaller each year and it’s praised like some medical achievement) and expensive treatment for terminal illnesses. We have to talk about it - it’s unaffordable and unattainable. Those that don’t see this have large employee heavily subsidized insurance, which still gets more expensive every year. It’s way more than inflation - our ACA plan with no changes went up 25% in a YEAR.

Sure, those are extreme examples. But what you really want is to deny medical treatment to these outliers because you see it as somehow interfering with your own healthcare coverage. It's selfish.

It is having an effect everyone’s coverage, ACA, employer sponsored, Medicare, Medicaid, you name it. Everyone is paying more because we cover these crazy extremes.

Or maybe everyone is paying more because medical billing is out of control, and hospitals (and pharma) know they can get away with it. My hospital charged us $100 for a tube of Desitin when my son was born. One doctor just introduced himself and then charged us $$$. That's the kind of thing driving up your costs across the board.

I gladly donate. And many times I will donate as much as possible. I can’t imagine what it would be like to lose a spouse and suddenly be on one income with kids. My cousin suddenly lost his wife. I was more than happy to donate

Enjoy your gilded existence

Preach.

I experienced this. May your soul rot.

I totally agree, OP.

People who can't afford a funeral should just choose cremation and pay the $3-5 K for that. It's just credit card debt or predatory payday loan debt that'll render them unable to save for years. Why would that be a big deal?

Better yet, people should just not die. I bet the person who died wasn't even eating organic good and seeing specialists regularly!

I think that most people who use words like "tacky" and "classy" live in weird little bubbles and are kind of xenophobic and lack empathy. But that's just me.

I think they are "gross".

My biggest problem with GoFundMes is distrust. I don't believe the money people say that they need / spend.

As long as that limit isn't on you and yours.

We’ve probably spent $100k on my sister’s cancer treatment. We started one because so many friends asked us and wanted to help. We are not keeping track of who does and doesn’t give and certainly don’t begrudge anyone who doesn’t give. Be grateful you’re not in a position to need this.

Cremation cost money too genius.
