Most of us have the true pandemic babies and I worry about the influx of kids and if this year will be radically different bc of the birthing boom. There’s also less availability due to all the preferences. My boring app only has an only child with a not great IB, so I really need literally anywhere else to accept me.

Even if it’s just me typing here, this will be my place to come and have my semi-freak out before going back to life as usual.

Has your child been in daycare? Nanny? Mine was home for 18 months but has been in center-based care since 6/21. He’s good at school but it took a while for him to adjust and I’m concerned about starting the process again. When he moved to the 2y class, he kept talking about his old teacher but periodically would see her in the building so I can only imagine how much more it’ll be in a huge school with everything new. Just wondering if it’s just me that’s literally counting down the days until 3/31???

So the kids going into PK3 next year were conceived mostly before the pandemic. Most people stopped trying during the early days of covid. Kids born Oct19-Sept20 are eligible for PK3 next year.

I think this year will be different not due to a birthing boom, but because the rising PK3 class were born - or were infants - during the peak of the pandemic. The parents of these children might not have felt the same need to move further out (for more space, etc) that parents of older children did. As such, I think there will be more demand for PK3 slots than in prior years. Definitely eager to see how this plays out - I'd certainly feel more confident about our odds of getting into our IB school in 2020-21 or 2022-23 than in the years prior to the pandemic.

Not sure if you guys want to hear this, from a parent of kids now in middle school, but DC preK was great for both of the kids, as well as for their parents. Your kid will most likely love their experience.

DC school lottery is a weird combination of luck and strategy, but it's mostly luck, so stressing about strategy is perhaps not worth it.

At the end of the day, the only important choice is whether to stick with DCPS.

Correct (OP here). The real effect will be seen with the 2024-2025 PK3 class. This class has pretty much just known masks and quarantining. My son was born Feb 2020 and lockdowns started when he was 1 month old. He stayed home for 18 months and had a hard transition to daycare. He did well going to the 2 year old class but he still can see his old teachers. His daycare also still masks so that will be another adjustment if the new school doesn’t.

Generally the same worries as other moms before us with a few different. I think these kids have more anxiety than others before them. I’m just ready for the results and hope they’re updated on their site tomorrow night!

I don't know who needs to hear this, but: it will be okay if your 3-year-old isn't fully potty-trained.

This depends the school. Our charter was totally hands-off and I got called in whenever he had an accident to deal with it and if it had kept up we would be de-enrolled.

If you're going to be successful as a parent in this school system, you will need to find your chill.

Thanks, I know everything will work out and he’ll for sure get into Bunker Hill if nothing else. It is good for ECE but my concern is for the years past that.

I live in Brookland and work in SW so that’s why the list seems haphazard. I mapped out typical commutes in Waze and WMATA from home to school and school to work so these are all doable in theory.

Ahh, interesting. I’ll do a dry run wherever he lands to test it out. I’m for sure going to come back and post our results. Today’s (hopefully) the day!

Moving to DC, elementary school is 2 blocks away with K-aged kiddo 1, hoping/praying/making animal sacrifices that kiddo 2 gets into the same school's PK3 program. Oh how easy things would be!

You'll get in now or over the summer. But it's unclear to me why it would be better than Bunker Hill.

I think I was thinking about the upper grades for Bunker Hill. Their scores weren’t the best but I know their PK program is great. My results are below. I seem to have some decent waitlist numbers. Hopefully we move up!
