Thanks for posting this. I hadn't seen this update. Fourteen and fifteen year old suspects? How horrible, whether they were from RM or Gaithersburg. What the F is going on in our schools. No wonder my kid tells me she doesn't want to use the bathrooms at school. Parents should be horrified that this is going on AT school.

Your kid doesn’t want to use the bathroom at school? Are you at all considering other options? That’s a horrible experience for a kid.

Another RM parent and my daughter never goes to the bathroom. All day. The amount of vaping, drugs and fighting going on in bathrooms at RM is unreal. She will go off campus at lunch or just hold it until she gets home. It has been that way the past 2 years she has been there. So many people said it was such a great school and we haven't seen that side yet.

Also have a kid at RM and the bathrooms are definitely an issue.

Can you imagine working at a job where you couldn’t use the bathroom when you wanted because there were too many co-workers in there smoking. My kid knows the times when they can use the bathroom, and otherwise holds it.

It really stinks and I’m not sure why they can’t do anything about this.

One of the past PTA meetings I asked about the security around the bathrooms and was told that a female staff makes the rounds. I took that at face value.

There's a PTA meeting today around security. Definitely bring this up in that meeting. ITA, there needs to be more monitoring around the bathrooms. They need a female security guard to handle girls bathrooms.

There is a Google form for parents to fill out with questions. I hope parents from this thread can ask about this. It's not just the girls bathroom. The boys bathrooms are also a nightmare, and of course, both the girls and boys bathrooms on the one floor are often closed. Seems like admin should be able to come up with something to alleviate this issue.

Same. My son was threatened when he innocently went to the bathroom. Refused to tell staff because he knew his risk of getting beat up/bullied was much higher than staff doing anything about a group of kids vaping and passing pills in a deal. There are no consequences and the school just doesn’t discipline. He never goes to the bathroom anymore. I expressed my generalized concern in Oct and never even had a reply email.

Unfortunately, this is the truth.

I don't think it's just RM though. Sounds like all schools in MCPS simply don't enforce consequences or discipline. Not sure it's just the RM Principal at fault here. If she does try to implement discipline, will Central Office support her? I think her hands are tied. She can't kick kids out of school. The disciplinary actions appear to be non-existent?

This is a school-system wide problem that MCPS doesn't want to address or fix. Interested to see what she has to say at the meeting tonight.

It's the Restorative Justice BS that MCPS uses. They don't to actually punish the offenders because they are mostly URM, and then the progressive liberals will throw a fit that too many URM are being punished. the progressive liberals prefer that those troubled kids be unleashed on the rest of the public. They don't care that your kid can't use the bathroom. It's the price to pay for #equity.

Agree that this is what's happening. It's unfortunate, but I guess it's equitable, because now kids of all races can't use the bathrooms safely. I definitely blame the progressives for pushing SROs out of our schools, and for pushing useless Restorative Justice initiatives for the current situation in MCPS. It's not working.

Unexpected but the Gaithersburg kids shouldn’t have been at RM in the first place. This is a huge problem of kids not being held accountable for missing class.

Seriously. It should have been super easy to identify the Gaithersburg kids. They would have been missing from class. But, clearly nobody at Gaithersburg HS even knew these kids were missing? They were able to hop on the bus and come all the way down to RM during school hours.

There are over 2500 kids at RM. Many cut classes and walk in and out of school. I highly doubt my son could tell who is it is not an RM student and it isn’t his job to police or deny kids entrance into the school. This is a major security issue. The school is not safe.

They will be requiring students to wear their IDs on a lanyard, according to the recent email.

Agree that the school is not safe the way things are now.

It literally is happening in another MCPS high school and it is fine.
And I don't understand this thinking that the kids are unable to remember one more thing to take to school. How often do they forget their phones or backpacks or headphones or chromebooks? It isn't that hard.

It seems to work well at WJ.
I agree that the bathrooms are a huge problem (although my kid tells me most of the drug users go to some creek that is nearby to use).

They are giving our lanyards and asking kids to bring in their IDs. If you don’t have IDs then you will have your picture taken. RM plans to implement ID requirement by 2/13. Kudos to them for moving fast, at least with something under their control. There’s so much that’s out of their control though.

Also, one of the incidents involved a former RM student who probably has a student ID from previous years. How are they going to be able to tell that this is not a current student from several feet away. The font on those ID are tiny. They need to have a colored background for every year so it's easily identifiable.
