Don’t twist yourself into knots over a test that comes before the SAT and ACT. For the schools that care about testing, they’re looking at the SAT and ACT. The PSAT does not matter. Talk to some admissions officers and ask them.
Or don’t and keep writing articles for “news” websites that rely on clickbait. |
Mine did. She made NMSF but bombed the SAT, so this would give colleges reference. Besides there really weren’t that many awards she could list for the 5 slots on commonapp. Her high school doesn’t give any academic excellence awards, by subject or overall, principal’s list, improvement award, student of the month, etc. So, being a NMSF or commended definitely matters. |
TJ doesn’t give school based awards while counselors recommend not to leave the awards slots blank. So do you think everyone won 5 regional, state or national awards? |
This is incredibly stupid. The kids at private schools are overwhelmingly the children of Democrats. Shutting down TJ would make the Democrats happy. Moreover, it is the Democrats who want to ruin TJ by turning it into "entry by quota" rather than "entry by merit". |
Not the writer of the article. Stop trying to sweep it under the rug. If this is the direction fcps is going, parents should know and be asking how their kids may be impacted. |
My oldest was a NMF and my youngest was a commended student. They both put the award (it is a great honor) on their applications. I don’t their effects the admissions outcome. I think schools looks at many elements when making decisions. |

Commended = Honorable mention (at best).
Neither the NMSC or top colleges give a hoot about "commended" status. The elite colleges rarely include the number of NM finalists in their "at a glance," "FAQs," or "class profiles." Commended status simply does not register. No commended student was harmed. Your SAT score spoke for itself when submitted. Your PSAT score is not required or expected. COMMENDED STUDENTS DO NOT CONTINUE IN THE COMPETITION FOR NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIPS. From the NMSC: In late September, more than two-thirds (about 34,000) of the approximately 50,000 high scorers on the PSAT/NMSQT receive Letters of Commendation in recognition of their outstanding academic promise. Commended Students are named based on a nationally applied Selection Index score that may vary from year to year and is typically below the level required for participants to be named Semifinalists in their respective states. Although Commended Students do not continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships, some of these students do become candidates for Special Scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses. |
As others have mentioned, colleges that are test blind do NOT look at scores. And, not everyone is applying to the top 20. |
Then WHAT DO YOU THINK the National Merit recognition is based on.
College admissions departments aren't dumb. You want them to play dumb when it benefits your kid...... You either submit your SAT/ACTscore or not. You can attempt to back-door it, but it won't matter. If you are hiding something, there must be a reason..... |
It is meaningless. Most schools are disregarding standard test scores because of cheating. These crazy parents can't accept that it's changed. |
don't think it really matters as schools have SAT scores....
only matters where it means you qualify for a merit award |
Commended is like 'nice try', but no award for you. Bury it. |
