How many here had students that missed being NMSF and were Commended instead

Anonymous
Our school includes it on transcript and tells kids to also list on app as an award.

Same yet somehow not commended either

Mine put it on the awards list but down at bottom I think. Dunno if it helped but couldn’t have hurt. She’s at HYPSM.

Little to none...your SAT score is most important. Nice you also did well on the PSAT, but who cares.

Hello TJ's attorney!

Just stating an obvious fact. The PSAT scores are important for various scholarships tied to those scores, but little else. Confusing or surprising to you?

It would be odd, but do you think a college cares that your PSAT score was a 1500 yet your SAT score was a 1400 (this would be quite strange admittedly). Conversely, do you think they care your PSAT score was 1300 if your SAT score is 1580?

Some schools give $$ for these awards. The kids did not know this and therefore did not apply. The chance for a family with limited means to save $10,000's or more is hardly "dumb."

Would you bother putting commended status down for MIT? Probably not.

They won’t care about NMSF either. Everyone there is at least that.

COMMENDED is meaningless. Stop letting the rage mongers get you worked up over non-issues.

The people who think Commended is impressive enough to put on applications probably also paid for National Society of High Schools Scholars certificates.

At DC's school Commended honor = source of shame. Means you're at bottom of class. No, she didn't mention it. Had other awards that actually meant something, were much more impressive.

What school has the majority of students getting NMSF?

I have trouble believing there are people who care so much about commended, and never looked up the cut scores and so genuinely didn't know their kid got it.

It's impressive to have scores at that level, but it's not like something like an essay contest where you have no idea if you won.

False. COMMENDED means that your score was high enough that if you lived in West Virginia, North Dakota, or Wyoming, you would have been a semi-finalist. Possibly a whole bunch of other states too.

You have no idea what you're talking about. To find savings, go for either need-based financial aid or merit scholarships based on GPA and SAT scores!!! Why is this so hard??? Who is pushing this misinformation about commended status? You get nothing in financial terms just for being commended.

Yeah, where is this thread coming from? One of our kids was commended and we could find a single $2k scholarship from one school that was even relevant to us. Got large merit award from T50 school. Semifinalist child had broader options.
Anonymous
Of course put it down. For MIT or anywhere else. While the help might be negligible, it will not hurt, and costs nothing if you have an empty award slot.

I cannot fathom the agenda of people acting like commended is some kind of yellow participation ribbon.

What if they had a 35/36 on the Act? Wouldn’t commended look worse in comparison?
