What did you notice the first time you came to the US.

You should get out more.

When I went to a small city in Japan with my red haired son, local people were fascinated and asked to have their photo taken with him. I think it's natural for people to notice when they see someone different from what is typical every day.

My MIL is from Ecuador and moved here at age 13, in October. She could't believe the kids at school who were telling her that on Oct 31 if she dressed up in a costume and went door-to-door, people would give her candy. She was sure it was a prank the kids were trying to play on her.

And she had never seen snow....

It's funny...my parents live in central Manhattan where the grocery stores are pretty tiny. Even the shopping carts at "Red Apple" and "Key" and other NYC groceries are small. Whenever they come to visit me in MoCo, they ooh and ahh at Safeway and Giant like Soviet emigres...and they always want to go grocery shopping whenever they are here.

Not the PP you are quoting but another PP who came from the Soviet Union in the late '80's. There weren't many black people there at all at the time (and I lived in Moscow, most "cosmopolitan" of the Soviet cities). I am actually not sure I saw a black person "in real life" (that is, not on TV) until I came here. It's obviously different there now.

That person was being honest about not seeing dark skinned black people in certain countries. In all of the times I've been to a certain country in South America, I never once saw a black person. All the people there knew of black people was from TV.

Anything you like about the U.S.? If not, please go home and make room for other people who want to come here.

I was thinking the same thing.

I have always wondered why some people choose to live in the U.S. when all they do is complain about it. I'm a descendent of immigrants (like practically everyone else) and my grandparents have always been grateful for the way the U.S. is.

I would love to know what you people think 500 lbs looks like.

If someone is 500 lbs, waddle away, it beats sitting at home.

Any amusement park.

Yes, go to Disney World. I could NOT believe how many overweight people of all ages were using the motorized scooters.

Compared to where?? I've been a lot of different places, and can't think of a single place where women have better standing. Maybe Sweden...

YOu're not serious, are you? You do realize that women didnt get the right to vote till quite late (comparatively speaking) here and that they still dont earn an equal amount. ANd that there still hasn't been a woman president.

Also to add to 17:03, our maternity leave policies and lack of good subsidized child care options are a joke compared to most western european countries. American women are at a deficit when it comes to these matters.

Actually when I first read that comment I assumed she meant that where she had lived all the black people were light skinned. Is it possible that there are some Caribbean nations that are primarily made up of lighter-skinned black people?

Just hang around the hot tubs on a Carnival Cruise.

Blech - I'll never go on a cruise now...

Plenty in Europe. Not in many parts of Asia. Many parts of Asia even a a Caucasian is a rare site. If you don't travel much, and haven't been to those parts of the world, don't make sweeping generalizations. Nobody said there weren't any Europe.

There's also dark skinned black people in the middle east genuis.

Yes, there are. If you look at a map, you'll notice proximity to Africa. If you study history, you'll realize that the slave trade had a huge impact there, too. Emiratis and Omanis are frequently of African descent. But that has nothing whatsoever to do with the fact that there are many places in the world where there are no blacks, except perhaps the very rare tourist or business traveler.
