What did you notice the first time you came to the US.

For those who weren't born here.

I came at age 9 and I first notcied the smooth roads, the cars almost seemed to float.
The kids always had candy, in their mouths, hands or pockets.
People were a bit chubbier.
No stray dogs.

Everything was cleaner...streets were swept and everything was landscaped--even McDonald's! The cars were all newer and not rusty. No stray chickens.

Everything was bigger and people were just faster and kept more to themselves.

Would be interesting to know where everyone came from. I came over from Germany.

I first came to NY and the smell of the city streets was yeeesh

Not me, but DH came here as an adult - first thing he noticed was no one could understand him when he ordered a cheeseburger and so he had to adopt a crazy-awful American accent (he's Australian). He also was wowed by the size of 95 and the Beltway.

This is interesting- I came from Germany. People were slower, and were much..friendlier in a more forced way. I came from Berlin, and moved to the South. What about you?

Fashion was years behind (late 70s/early 80s). Candy/chocolate wasn't nearly as tasty. Gum was much better. Tons of choices in chips, lousy cheese selection....great burgers, bad bread. (yeah, it's all about the food!).

And yes, people were much heavier.

I was a kid, and I had never seen water fountains before. People could lean over and get water whenever they wanted.

It would be really interesting if people would post where they are from...please? I'm Germany #2, obviously there are completely different experiences even from the same country!

OP here, I am from Jamaica.

That everybody seemed to be rich, nice houses and beautiful cars.

My husband had no clue there were homeless people on the streets. It was very shocking to him (how could rich America be like this?) He's from Africa.

How conservatively everyone dressed (from London).

Did you come straight to DC? Because moving from the midwest to California, (it's almost like going to a foreign country!) I noticed how flashy and skimpy the clothes were.

No stray chicken, cats, dogs, donkeys or monkeys.

People were not fashionable at ALL.

Too much fuzz over baseball. Really? Snore.

People are taller here, in general.

No homeless people sleeping on the sidewalk everywhere.
