It’s different because it makes it feel like part of the overall transaction, instead of an optional extra. Regardless, it makes me go out of my way to avoid places that use these systems. Probably not the effect they intend. |
This is a you problem. |
I’m clearly not alone. |
| I've joined your ranks OP. It's been surprisingly easy to ignore the GenZ glares when they flip the screen around asking for a tip. |
| The thing that put me over the edge was the tip question during checkout at Norman's Farm Stand. Now we are tipping for the farmer's market? I bagged my own apples and brought them to the register. The person just rang me up and I declined a shopping bag. Ridiculous! |
And it’s the business owners who set up these point-of-sale systems, not the wage earners. They might as well just put a sign up that says “we don’t pay our employees enough!” |
| Thank you!! I’m in California where minimum wage for waiters is over $15, so now you only get 20% BEFORE TAX. Last straw was when subway tried to make me tip on that screen. Nope! It just takes practice. First I was only using cash, but now I just need to get used to clicking no on the screen. |
A mechanic is asking for a tip?????? I would tip a bellhop though, because my bags are heavy! |
Yep this happened to me as well. Going back to cash! |
I’m a nanny in LA and charge $40/hr. I do not expect tips at all, however, most families tip. I give priority over the holidays, when my schedule is packed, to families who tip. Even if it’s just $10-20, when you round up, you get priority. |
| Grampa forgot his Metamucil, again. |
Do you do a reduced tip on that or just no tip at all? I never know what to do! |
| The thing that I REALLY hate is that now when you travel, even countries without a tipping culture, now expect Americans to tip!!! I was just in the Maldives where you are charged 22-23% on everything, with 10% being a service fee. An employee told me that no one really tips except Americans and that staff literally wait around for tips because they know Americans will do it. So annoying and yes I tipped, because they literally didn’t leave my room until I opened my wallet. |
I hear you on this. I will tip my hairdresser, wait staff, and $5/day for the hotel room. I will even do a few dollars for curb-side pickup where someone goes outside to give me my food bag. But I refuse to be victim to the tip for every damn thing. |
We already have higher wages for waiters in California and higher meal prices, but people still expect 20-30% tips! |
