+1 The admit rate published online, etc. bears no resemblance to the actual admit rate at various schools. It's become much more difficult to get in from NoVa high schools. We really liked JMU too. |
Their historic admissions rate is pretty meaningless. They just joined the Common App last year, leading to a big jump in applications. Will be interesting to see where it settles out at. Prior to last year, you had to do their own application so that definitely weeded out people who weren't highly interested. |
The JMU acceptance rate for the fall 2022 entering class from our FCPS high school was approximately 72% (about 230 applied). |
JMU is a good school and almost every kid I’ve ever known to have gone there loved it - but it’s no more or less prestigious now than it was in the 90s. It still attracts a lot of kids who would rather have gone to UVA, except now they’re not “just missing” UVA. The chasm between the two schools when it comes to admissions is much wider now. The typical JMU kid today wouldn’t have a prayer of getting into UVA. |
According the SCHEV, which publishes the real and unassailable statistics, 79 percent of Fairfax County applicants for 2021-22 got in. https://research.schev.edu//enrollment/b8_admissions_locality.asp |
This appears to be true at our FCPS high school. Those admitted from our high school to the UVA fall 2022 entering class had an average GPA of 4.43 (as a graduating senior) and an average SAT of 1470, versus 3.87 and 1250 for JMU. |
This makes me sad. i went to JMU in the early 90's and the acceptance rate was 34%-ish. I was surrounded by smart, well rounded, fun people. Seems like JMU prioritized growing over maintaining high standards. It's basically now just like Radford.
|
| I don’t know that that is true. I think the standards for admission are higher now than they previously were, but more in state students are applying |
You are remembering wrong. JMU was not rejecting 2/3 of applicants in the early 1990s. It’s simply not true. |
+1. Everything has gotten more selective. Including JMU. PP has it wrong. |
+1 Totally bizarre post. "Just like Radford"? Um, no. |
Look - the school is fine but don’t lie. It’s not prestigious. It is fine. |
That PP was being sarcastic. |
Grade inflation is real. Current students are no smarter than those of previous decades. In fact, professors often complain that students are ill prepared for college classes. |
Grade inflation is real and rampant at both the high school and college level. SAT has been recentered up several times. Parents need to level set when evaluating Jr's accomplishments. |
