When I was in college in the 90s, JMU was knicknamed Just Missed UVA because it was the safety school for kids who didn't get into UVA. It has a nice reputation as a good school with lots of fun parties. NOW, it definitely has risen in prestige and is much harder to get into. Several of my friends (both in and OOS) have kids there and all of them absolutely love it. For some kids it was their first choice, for others they didn't get into Tech so they went to JMU. I have a 10th grader for whom I think JMU would be a great fit so I am very attracted by its rise. I have also never met anyone who went there that also didn't love it. It just seems to have so many positives.
JMU is a good school and almost every kid I’ve ever known to have gone there loved it - but it’s no more or less prestigious now than it was in the 90s. It still attracts a lot of kids who would rather have gone to UVA, except now they’re not “just missing” UVA. The chasm between the two schools when it comes to admissions is much wider now. The typical JMU kid today wouldn’t have a prayer of getting into UVA.
