Can you tell me about JMU?

Who are you hiring?

Not on your hire list? I can’t think of a company that *only* hires from certain colleges.

I think class sizes are smaller and thus is a better way to start lab sciences. Research ops are fewer than at VT. Easier to find your first group at JMU, but less room to branch out later. Decent teacher training program.

Is that outdated? My kid’s NOVA high school had a 48% acceptance rate last year.

Acceptance rates are no representative of Nova acceptance rates.

She likely would have had a good chance of acceptance at UVA/W&M, but they were not her vibe. She didn't like VT. She loves the genuine, down to earth friendly vibe at JMU. She's made wonderful friends, joined a sorority and several clubs and has excellent grades heading into finals. She has found that in her intro classes she's definitely above the average academically speaking, but thats been a good thing. She's still challenged, but finding lots of success. It's not an academic grind, and that type of environment wouldn't have been a good fit. She has just as many close friends from OOS as from VA. The food is great, campus is beautiful, people are super friendly, there is SO much to easily get involved with and the party scene has been a lot of fun for her too. In all, it's been the perfect fit for her so far and I'm very happy with JMU as a parent.

Same for my daughter. My daughter has found her group, has very good professors and mentoring. Campus is beautiful - I get almost daily shots of sunrises and sunsets. Being in the mountains is quite nice.

Another grad who absolutely loved it. Will add here that VT is also a great school, and everyone I know who went there is fiercely loyal.

In my experience, if you’re happy and secure in your choices, you don’t feel the need to put down others.

OP, good luck to your kid wherever they land.

My DC’s experience is different. She is a freshman and is having trouble fitting in. She thinks that undergrads are too politically conservative and shallow 🙄.

71% for 2022.

There’s no way to verify statements such as these. It’s interesting how the JMU boosters have come out this admissions season. I cannot shake recalling the number of times my neighbor‘s son told me that the EMTs were at his dorm yet again for multiple cases of alcohol poisoning.

All of the teachers and counselors in LCPS and FCPS seemed to be JMU grads. (True)

One of the worst teachers my kid had was, you guessed it, a JMU grad! (True)

See how this works?

How much of a helicopter are you? Or are you just very, very, nosy that you know where all of the counselors and teachers went to college? I have kids in HS and have no idea where their teachers went to school.

+1
The PP is trolling. "All" of the teachers/counselors in LCPS and FCPS"? Yeah, right. And the snark about the alcohol poisoning could be applied to virtually any large university. Yawn.

DP. Yes, that is outdated and yes, it totally depends on the high school.

Weird that you don't include a link. Here's mine. Last year's admission rate was 81%. This year's admission rate was 71%. Did you really think no one would call you out on your false information?

Exactly. Love these sniffy posts, trying so hard to put down a very good school. So transparent.

My son loves it, but he also loved VT. It was a hard choice for him. My other son chose VT and loves that school as well! Something for everyone in VA.
