What is the test? |
It's rare but it happens. CAP is much more selective than many of the other regional magnets. |
Not rare at all. My DC and quite a few of her other friends are in that category |
I call BS on "quite a few" of those friends. |
I'm not the PP and can confirm this is a pretty normal occurence. Within my child's peer group, I'm aware of four kids deciding between CAP and RMIB. A few of them have other admissions in the mix, one for Blair SMCS and a few (including my kid) for other more STEM-focused programs. But if the broader point is that CAP is not "test-in" because there's not one test that determines admissions, I guess that's true. It's true of every other magnet program in the county, however. MCPS uses the description "criteria-based" so if folks prefer that nomenclature, so be it. At any rate, congrats to all of the kids who were admitted. It seems like a great program, and a high calibre of students based on those who presented last night. Given my child's specific interests (including a desire to study in our family's home country), I think they will be accepting RMIB over CAP, but that's just personal circumstances rather than a sense that CAP is anything but excellent. |

There's some overlap between CAP and RMIB and also some overlap between SMCS and Wheaton but not between SMCS, RMIB and CAP. DC knows lots of friends in at all these but the Venn diagram at least in their world of the overlap of all those three shows 0.

Your data point of one |
Yeah, my own datapoint of one is that my kid got into all those programs. So at least one kid did. |
| Your kid must not know many, becuase i know at least 5. i know 3 from Easterns program that actually got into all 3 and two of them picked SMSC and one picked CAP. |
| Not this year, but in years past (to the above post) |
| DC said there may be a couple at Takoma but that it's not common at all. I think many kids there don't apply to CAP and sometimes more humanities oriented kids don't apply to Blair. |
Why are you even talking about other years? |
Yup, this happened to mine as well. He also would have been great at CAP, and I was surprised he didn't get in, but he didn't show any of his humanities bent in his application so they just had his high MAP-R scores. They are all great programs. |
| Fwiw, my CAP kid says it’s less intense than Eastern was- in a good way. Not the workload but the cohort of kids is less competitive and grade grubbing than they were at Eastern. I think that stuff goes on elsewhere, but at least for my kid, there’s less of it in CAP. |
| How many kids apply to CAP each year? |
