Overcrowding at Walter johnson

She may know which neighborhoods/clusters are going to be included in the boundary study, but no, nobody knows exactly which neighborhoods are going to Woodward.

She does.

The Woodward construction is already well underway. There's a construction website if you are confused.
Karimihas has been at MCPS for almost 25 years. She will be there after this superintendent and BOE. Administrators outlast the faces the public sees.
She's got this all planned out. She won't tell you, but she knows. The BOE is and always is irrelevant to these decisions. BOE members do what they are
told to do.

Ha! Finally, someone points out the truth/basic reality of MCPS, and no one believes them. I agree with this poster, Karimihas knows exactly what will happen/who will attend Woodward - the official pricess is a fake dog and piny show. She won't tell you and trust me, her RBF is legendary - she won't give away a thing, not even a clue!

Lots of schools are overcrowded. So happy to hear that MCPS is prioritizing the richest kids though. 🙄

Sad but true

Except it isn't true. WJ is 550 students over capacity, more than any other school. Blair, Einstein, Northwood, and Wheaton are close behind.

Have you seen the portables at Einstein? Clearly the school is bursting at the seams.

It's not a competition as to which school is more overcrowded (this is how the MCPS win, pitting schools/parents against each other). They can BOTH be severely overcrowded.

I believe it. Is she in Seth Adams' shop, or somewhere else in the MCPS bureaucracy?

Seth is under her - Seth replaced another disaster, James Song. Adrienne has been around forever

Hate to break it to you, but WJ and the high schools in the DCC are not the richest kids in MCPS. And, this has been in the works for over 10 years. The WJ people have been fighting for relief from overcrowding, while MCPS said it wouldn't happen

The surrounding areas that will get chosen are the more comfortable areas of DCC.

1. Nobody knows which areas will be chosen.
2. The "more comfortable areas of the DCC" are not "surrounding" or even anywhere near Woodward.

It's a DCC problem, so let them deal with it even if they have to bus those kids across the county. The bottom line is we only care about neighborhood schools when we're talking about our neighborhood anyway.

Yes. There are ten significantly overcrowded high schools in MCPS. These are the 2021 numbers of students beyond capacity for each, which I'm sure will all have grown even larger when this year's official enrollment is recorded next week. And relief for the overcrowding is years away in each case:

Walter Johnson (549 over capacity) [to be relieved by Woodward 2026]
Montgomery Blair (319) [Northwood 2026]
Clarksburg (283) [Damascus expansion 2026]
Quince Orchard (278) [Crown 2027]
Northwood (276) [Northwood 2026]
Winston Churchill (264) [feasibility study proposed TBD]
Albert Einstein (252) [Woodward/Northwood 2026]
Northwest (233) [Crown 2027]
Wheaton (141) [Woodward/Northwood 2026]
Poolesville (102) [Poolesville expansion 2024]

Nope, Seth is Adrienne's supervisor. He's director of the Department of Facilities Management, one part of which is the Division of Capital Planing/Real Estate, where Adrienne is the director.

What about RM? Portables there also.

And with the new high density housing slated to go in at Twinbrook, that will be WAY over capacity in a few years also.

RM is #11, at 93 overcapacity last year. Also will be relieved by Crown in 2027.

There will be bleachers on both sides of the stadium field.

Looks like the cell tower has been removed from the Woodward bleachers. Maybe you can enlighten everyone as to where it is going to go?

Patently false at the high school level.

Poolesville is a toxic construction site. My child tells me the toilets hardly work, the water is brown, the school is in a cage and it is chaos especially when it rains. They do not even have a band room and barely a gym. That school is so sub-par and it stinks because those house some of the brightest students in the county.

Anonymous wrote:550 students over at WJ sounds dangerously overcrowded, and 2026 is still quite a few years away. They should open Woodward immediately after the construction is finished & find alternative plans for housing Northwood students. It will only get worse. The only other option is redistricting some of the incoming 9th graders next year to a different high school, but it appears that no other HS around WJ has the room.

So an east county school that badly needs a renovation will get the short straw again??? Developers of all housing including condos and apartments need to provide adequate funding for school construction, the old false paradigm that people with kids don't live in multi housing units is very detrimental. All this could have been predicted and alarm bells were raised many years ago about population trends.

Don't worry, it is not going to happen. Northwood will go in for 2 years (with no fields, no aux gym, etc), and then some from WJ and some from DCC will go in 2026.

This is partly due to the incompetence of the long range planning staff and partly due to lack of funding (which means other peiorities) priorities.

Keep in mind, 3 HSs opening pretty much together is unheard of (Northwood, Woodward and Crown).

That said, as per the bold above, alarm bells were raised by parents many years back, and MCPS staff (then Capital Planning now Long Range Plannin), stalled, delayed, and denied. Their incompetence is truly astounding.

So, are you saying that the 2026-2027 school year is the first possible year that students from WJ will started attending school in the new building in the old Woodward space? When will families within the cluster know whether their kids will either be eligible to attend there or will be "forced" to do so?

And thank you to the cluster parents who have tracked this topic and advocated for our cluster's needs for so many years.

Your cluster's "needs" are not of greater value than any other cluster, or the system overall. A major reason for everything wrong with the system is the advocacy and carve outs for certain areas. Its the national political landscape in micro.
