WJ has just welcomed its largest class ever - 900+ students - they received many more freshmen enrollments than expected, possibly because of new families moving to the area (due to rise in housing options) and students returning to public schools from private post-Covid. WJ is immensely crowded and is understaffed, as well. Class sizes are quite large this year and there are now 15 portable classrooms.

The completion of the Amalyn development will be horrible for the local schools.

As compared to all the other developments?

We’ll, this thread is about overcrowding at WJ and Amalyn is a huge development that will impact WJ, NB and Ashburton.

Put all the condos, apartments and townhouses west of Montgomery Mall in the Churchill cluster.

Churchill is overcrowded too.

Lots of schools are overcrowded. So happy to hear that MCPS is prioritizing the richest kids though. 🙄

MCPS and the county sold off or gave away a lot of land that was previously used for schools. This is one of the few they held on to and are reopening it.

Hate to break it to you, but WJ and the high schools in the DCC are not the richest kids in MCPS. And, this has been in the works for over 10 years. The WJ people have been fighting for relief from overcrowding, while MCPS said it wouldn't happen

The surrounding areas that will get chosen are the more comfortable areas of DCC.

1. Nobody knows which areas will be chosen.
2. The "more comfortable areas of the DCC" are not "surrounding" or even anywhere near Woodward.

Sure, we do, aside from WJ and Einstein, the other nearby school boundaries like Wheaton and, BCC since it was even mentioned in the original plan.

You sure are persistent.

+1. People keep mentioning specific high schools in the DCC. Woodward will relieve crowding at WJ and "the DCC". It makes sense that Einstein's boundaries within the cluster could get shifted since it is overcrowded, but, they could also shift Einstein kids to the new Northwood. It is really an unknown at this point. My crystal ball tells me that Woodward will be part of the DCC, and that it will mainly be filled with kids from its walk zone.

Isn’t the new Northwood supposed to take some of Blair’s students because of how overcrowded Blair is?

Yes. By the time the new Northwood building opens in 2026, its projected enrollment will be 1944, leaving 554 available seats. Blair's projected enrollment that same year puts it 643 students above capacity. So there won't even be enough room at Northwood to handle Blair's overcrowding, let alone Einstein's.

Adrienee Karamihas knows exactly which neighborhoods are going to the new Woodward HS.

She may know which neighborhoods/clusters are going to be included in the boundary study, but no, nobody knows exactly which neighborhoods are going to Woodward.

Sure, whatever you like to tell yourself.

Things no one knows yet:
-how long the Woodward construction will actually take
-when the boundary study will take place
-what the enrollment and projections of WJ and the DCC high schools will be during the spring/summer of the boundary study, and the following fall's official enrollment
-who will be working in central office that year
-who will be on the BOE that year

The Woodward construction is already well underway. There's a construction website if you are confused.
Karimihas has been at MCPS for almost 25 years. She will be there after this superintendent and BOE. Administrators outlast the faces the public sees.
She's got this all planned out. She won't tell you, but she knows. The BOE is and always is irrelevant to these decisions. BOE members do what they are
told to do.

The opening date was just recently moved back from 2025 to 2026. Who knows what will happen over the next 4 years? It could easily be delayed again.
