Ok, so your sport is more expensive than mine. Feel better now?

Sorry, I can of nothing more expensive than equestrian sports! 8)

832 and 1131 are way off base. I have participated in competitive organized sports for 40 years as a player, parent, coach and objective spectator. Boorish fan behavior, amongst both students and fans, is everywhere to some degree. Although it is thankfully a minority of fans, they draw the attention on themselves. It is not unique to any sport, school or socioeconomic demographic.

"Because these are the same guys on the sidelines of their kids games screaming at the coaches that their kids aren't getting enough playing time and encouraging the crazy lacrosse behavior that has led to so many problems. "

You make sweeping generalizations about a group of people of which you clearly knwo little. Most former lax players are actually very respectful of the coaches and playing time process. Often the most obsessed parents are those who never played the sport. Also, it is completely unfounded to suggest that a parent who played lax is encouraging "crazy lacrosse behavior that has led to so many problems". Where do you come up with this stuff? Just because you post it doesn't make it true.

from what I have seen across several sports, the loudest, most obnoxious and generally the most uninformed fans are those who have not played the game themselves. The most reserved and positive fans I know tend to be those who have played he game, particularly those that played at a high level. This isn't a universal truth, of course. I think that youth and HS lax games bring out some of the worst becuase the sport's rapid growth means that few parents and spectators have had personal experinece playing the sport.

Totally disagree. Worst fans are the over invested dads who want to scream coaching advice to their kids

In our experience with two travel teams, it's the dads who have daughters, but no sons, who are the worst. These are the dads who want to control the team policies, the coach, and the kids' playing times. Maybe this is just a fluke of our personal experience, who knows.

My husband has said to me that the worst sports parents are the ones who were not very good themselves, if they even played competitively at all. These parents live vicariously through their more athletically gifted child. DH played college football and now coaches our 10 yr old son's football team and says he knows exactly who the obnoxious parents are going to be, its never the ones who played themselves. Our son also plays lax on a travel team and, since my husband did not play lax other than intramurals, he keeps his mouth shut and trusts the coaches. He is exactly the way same with our daughter, giving advice only when he has actual experience (she doesnt play football but does play lax and basketball and soccer). I have followed his lead, as he was a better atholete than I, and have noticed this is pretty true across ALL sports.

Wow lady. Do you have an opinion of your own? It's 2011, not 1911.

wow. you ladies are harsh. she's speaking from personal experience and giving details, rather than the typical overgeneralizations on this site. i don't see anything to suggest she's not her own person. wha a serious jump to a conclusion. being married to you must be a peach.

Being married to you must be peeled grapes.

I am very liberated, but in some areas my husband knows more than I do. Even though I played sports and my DD is a DI athlete -- my husband still knows more than I do about most sports. So, I would cut the woman some slack who deferred to her husband.

With all due respect. I would accept that opinion if we were talking about who has the best potential to be a stand out athlete on a team. But that's not what we are talking about. We are talking about the sideline behavior and sportsmanship. In which case, its psychology, group dynamics and knowledge of basic manners which is more at play. You don't need to be an elite athlete to know right from wrong, unless, it appears, you are married to one.

Does anyone know what colleges turned George Huguely down?
Anonymous
George was a recruited athlete...so he wasn't turned down...he had a lot of opportunities. FWIW -- most starting Landon lax players are recruited for DI lax.
Anonymous
Recruited to Duke and UVA where their character and the school's reputation have been trashed for ever.
