Given that one has through sophomore year to declare a major that makes sense.

It's not like we expect 18 year olds to know exactly what they want to do for the next 40+ years.

Good point. A friend's kid is going to Stanford. She said he's probably going to go into mechanical engineering, but if I understood her correctly, they don't really declare a major for the first two years. Which seems pretty smart.
