To the Julius West parent considering TPMS the enriched classes would be different in the magnet.
Your child would take enriched math, science and computer science. TPMS also has HIGH so you would not miss out on the "advanced" social studies. The magnet math goes much deeper than the math at the home schools. Unless your child has outside activities that take up a lot of time it might be worth it. We know several students who do the commute on the bus and only do school activities and are thriving. We have an older DC who went to TPMS and a younger one who turned it down. You have two great choices OP. Whatever your child chooses it will be fine. |
The original post literally says "I know there is a lot of disparity throughout the county, and I am not criticizing that resources need to be allocated accordingly." There's already plenty of arguing here - no need to pick more fights. |
Yep |
I don't want my tax dollars dictated only by people in Silver Spring. Perhaps Montgomery County could be made smaller? Split it down 270 or maybe 200/370/28/112? That way parents on one end aren't forced to do things that parents on the other end want? |
Why don't you start the process |
FARMS kids get more federal money that also goes to your kids. Sounds like a great idea. Don't complain when those schools are better funded. |
HAHAHA will never happen. It is a state-level issue that nobody aside from meanspirited greedy people who stand to benefit at the expense of others would vote for. |
The good news is that your tax dollars are dictated by a variety of bodies, including the County Council, the School Board, and the state legislature. However, it's not like "your" elected representatives from West County are constantly battling with the East County reps. They all pretty much vote the same way, suggesting that they are reflecting the broad will of the electorate. That may not be your personal will, but c'est la vie in a democracy. |
| If it's too far, turn it down and let someone else who really wants to be there go. My kid is desperate for a spot at TPMS, and is devastated that he didn't get selected in the lottery. |
The lottery is pretty awful. One of my kids was selected last year and says there are in boundary kids on the math team running circles around the magnet kids. It really makes no sense that the county would ruin this program. |
It would make sense if you're helping friends and family but don't want to be accused of not selecting the most qualified for the program (how it was before)? |
