Downcounty middle school magnet location

OP, if your kid wants to do one of those magnets and gets in tons of kids ride the bus or drive in from upper River Road or wherever you live.

My kid attends (walks though) and it's an excellent program.

That said, the W middle schools are also excellent. If we lived over there we would likely not commute for the magnet.

I hear they're basically like every MCPS school they even have the same curriculum and teachers!

I remember seeing a presentation that TPMS (and maybe Argyle) is/are the only MCPS MS with three years of computer programming? They do seem to have more resources than other schools.

Not really. It's more that people who value education move to those areas.

Right. I don't know why PP tried to debunk the earlier post by talking about TPES, which isn't even a magnet anymore, instead of the OP's request to discuss the downcounty MS magnets.

True. It was disbanded right before covid and they moved to lottery because of the asian discrimination lawsuit?

Oh, but that's right. It is relevant since the OP wanted to know about the history WHY the magnet was so far in the corner of the county.

Now you know!

Poolesville is not a Downcounty middle school magnet. Only Eastern and Takoma are.

Yes but why is Poolesville also in the furthest reaches of the Montgomery County universe?

Both HS magnet programs are not accessible to DC commuters. Why is that?

^^ West DC commuters and VA commuters (along 270 or Shady Grove) in the center of the County

....because DC commuters are not HS students, generally?

Also, what do you mean by "both" HS magnet programs, since there are many more than 2 HS magnets. If you are talking about Blair, it's serviced by MCPS buses but also by a ton of public transporation, which I assume any HS student is capable of accessing.

How is it not a magnet anymore? Isn't it still a school with a focused/specialized curriculum?

No, TPES is a regular neighborhood primary elementary school with the same curriculum as other MCPS schools.

Because otherwise it would be way too small under MCPS guidelines for high schools.

Right. They are filling seats, which is useful and goes to the early non-conspiratorial explanation to why certain buildings were chosen.

Much low hanging fruit than moving boundaries!
